Survey: 42% of U.S. consumers want Windows tablet over Apple iPad

“Here’s a new survey out from Boston Consulting Group, which says 42 percent of U.S. consumers would like to buy a tablet that runs Microsoft’s operating system,” Peter Kafka reports for AllThingsD. “That makes it the most desired OS by a significant margin, trailed by Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android.”

Boston Consulting Group Tablet OS Survey

Kafka reports, “The BCG study isn’t an anomaly. Forrester conducted a poll earlier this year and got the same message, with an even starker gap between Microsoft and everyone else: ‘Only 9% of consumers considering buying a tablet actively prefer an Android tablet — compared with 16% who prefer iOS and 46% who prefer Windows.'”

  1. Amazon had 7 Windows (7) tablets one of them flagged as an iPad alternative. Most of them only have a few left in stock – folks better hurry cause these things are HOT!

I’m expecting Dell, Acer, and the other guys to pre-order millions based on this. HP perhaps not so much.

  2. Riiiiiggggght. Sure they WANT a Windows tablet. Just talked to a co-worker who is pulling out her hair trying to configure her Windows laptop to connect wirelessly. She is always amazed when I open the lid of the office MBPro that it’s connected within a second or two. I told her the iPad would take care of her computing need but her IT brother is pushing Linux desktop on her.

  3. I’m an Apple fanboy. To prove it, not counting past obsolete gear that no longer works, I presently have 2 iMacs, a MBA, 2 MBPs, an iPhone, iPod touch – and the list would grow ridiculous if I counted Apple stuff I’ve had over my lifetime. But, I do not want an iPad, and would consider seriously a Win8 tablet. The difference is the underlying philosophy. iPad is designed from the ground up NOT to be aimed primarily at content-creation. Sure, it does, not its primary role. I use my computers for doing serious work for clients, and content-consumption is not my main area. So Microsoft seems to be designed with my aim in mind. I think the iPad is brilliant, but it does not suit my needs. For instance, I write very long documents for my bread and butter, spending hours before a computer. Even an iPad with keyboard is not intended for that type of heavy duty lifting, but a Win8 plus keyboard and you’re ready for a day’s work, even on the go. I see myself using Mac for notebook and desktop, and Win8 for tablet, synced by Dropbox. And if Win8 gets decent after a few iterations, hey, I’m willing to move. I’m only a fanboy so long as OSX remains superior, for my needs. Note I did not say superior overall, but superior for my needs. And my needs are mobile computing without compromise, so I can get a full day and night’s work done even on the go.

  4. Hahahahahaha! I imagine those tablets would always run hot and have low battery because, let’s face it, they will need to constantly be running anti-virus software. Yeah, that’s what I want. People — in general — continue to be stupid.
