Statement by Apple’s Board of Directors:

We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today.

Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve.

His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts.

MacDailyNews Take: Oh, how we’d hoped this day would never come. Steve Jobs changed our lives profoundly.

We deeply mourn the passing of Steven P. Jobs. We have all lost a true Renaissance man. Mr. Jobs made the world a better place while bravely fighting an insidious disease during the last several years of his life under much public scrutiny. While we hope he did all of this free of pain, we suspect otherwise. Add “courageous” to the long list of superlatives describing this singular genius.

We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends. Thank you, Mr. Jobs for everything you have given to the world.

Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes.

The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them.

About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They invent. They imagine. They heal. They explore. They create. They inspire. They push the human race forward.

Maybe they have to be crazy.

How else can you stare at an empty canvas and see a work of art? Or sit in silence and hear a song that’s never been written? Or gaze at a red planet and see a laboratory on wheels?

We make tools for these kinds of people.

While some see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.

    1. I am speechless. What a great man. We all were lucky to have lived when he did. He gave the world so much. And needless to say he will be sorely missed. We will never see his like again. Rest easy Steve and thanks so much! My condolences to his family and Apple.

        1. Words cannot even come close to expressing his greatness, his challenge with such a deadly cancer, his love for and for what he has done to change the world.

        2. I had a feeling this would happen. At the event, the apple team seemed not too happy. I could see it.

          Tom Cook had it very difficult. Others too. It explains everything. I wish them and the family all the strength they can have.

          I was simply shocked. No words, just feelings… Strong feelings because i admire him.

          I am definitely gonna buy the (Walter Isaacson’s) biography of Steve Jobs.

          RIP Steve and thank you. For everything. Apple fan and user since 91 and that will never change.

    5. How did he make it a better place?

      By uniting vastly different people for one solitary cause: Apple and all that it embodies.

      Though we disagree on an infinite number of issues, we all agree that life without Apple would be a bunch of dull, gray or tan pc boxes. Yuck!

      3. Thanks, Fred. I want to remember that quote, and to use it to question myself the beginning of every morning starting tomorrow from here on out. It smacks of profound, thought-provoking words of advice. Another piece of inspiration that Mr. Jobs has provided to me (and everyone) in addition to his inspiring Macs and OS’s thru all these years.
        I wish I had bought a Next desktop when I could have. I still have my PowerBook 180 and remember fondly the graphics works I produced on his Mac 2 and the then new MacOS 7. So exciting to use.
        I will miss you, Steve Jobs. 55 feels way too early. I wish I could have known you.

  14. He enriched the lives of so many. I hope the posters on many tech sites can keep respectful. Regardless of your tech love he was an inspiration to every American with his tenacity and vision.

    1. Steve Jobs has brought wonder and magic to me for the last thirty years. I’ll forever be grateful for the empowerment of his work. His dedication to truly awesome products, and his integrity, makes him stand alone away from all other leaders. I will miss him and his Camelot reign. Rest in peace, Mr. Jobs.
