iPhone 5 with 4-inch screen, $99 iPhone 4S appear temporarily on regional carrier’s website

“TUAW reader Cory L. sent us an image today that he had captured from his web browser while perusing the i-Wireless prepaid cell phone section of the Cincinnati Bell website,” Steven Sande reports for TUAW. “The screenshot shows a placeholder for an iPhone 5 with no image and no ‘Add to basket’ purchase button.”

“A quick look at the site now shows that the placeholder has been removed. There are some fascinating things about this — first, Cincinnati Bell is a regional carrier in the US, not a major carrier like AT&T or Verizon,” Sande reports. “Second, the website is for a pay-as-you-go program.”

Sande reports, “Finally, the specs that are listed for the phone show an 8MP camera, 4G speeds (Cory notes that Cincinnati Bell’s network uses HSPA+), and a 4” screen… Another reader, Randy K., sent in another screenshot from the same site. This one shows a low-cost iPhone 4S device with different specifications than the rather expensive iPhone 5 shown above.

  1. well, this pair of a new iPhone 5 and updated iPhone 4S at a lower price does make complete market sense. and it would explain all the conflicting rumors too.

it’s either real or a perfect hoax. probably real.

      1. always a first time. they couldn’t just stick an “S” on the same iPhone 4 model. i think everyone does expect they will keep the iPhone 4 on the market at a lower price … just like they did with the 3GS. hey – that has an “S” on it too.

        1. i think 4S is for verizon that’s y they r so angry that they try to stop apple injunction case against samsung. iphone 5 is headed to at&t then.

    1. no way. I have been using i-wireless for years. They never advertise. They don’t even send e-mails. Their calling range is restricted to Cincinnati and Dayton. I pay $6 a month for the service.

  2. This makes perfect sense. An iPhone 4S that is A5 equipped and can use the Assistant, means the low end iPhone is a far better deal than any other low cost phone, and the iPhone 5 with 4 inch screen and 4G will satisfy the higher end. Apple wil sell millions upon millions of these phones.

  3. I’m with Photoflight1 on this, so many stupid carrier ‘leaks’ because no matter what Apple release – no, they will not know in advance – that’s why the release date is a couple of weeks away from announcement.

  4. I think the iPhone 5 will be available on the day of announcement. What else would explain the around the clock need for security at major airports to watch over a shipment? What other shipment is so important right now? Grain? Dasani water?

    1. nope, Apple has never RELEASED an iPhone on the day of ANNOUNCEMENT, look it up, it could be immenent say 10-15 days later BUT NEVER ON THE DAY – it’s impossible to be that secretive all over the world on day 1 when 3rd party are involved: aka. Service providers.

  5. If the new Voice system works only on the A5 with 1GB ram, Apple would want to have phones at multiple price points to sell that are able to run this feature. Only having an expensive, new phone that offers Assistant would not get it adopted widely enough, soon enough; and would leave a lot of people who would love it disenfrancised.

  6. I don’t quite see Apple offering an A5 chip on the 4S if it’s goin to be some sort of device for the poorer masses unless Apple’s figured out some way to build A5 chips at rock-bottom prices or maybe the 4S won’t be as inexpensive as everybody is saying. If the 4S is only going to have 8 GB of memory, Apple does save some money but Apple needs to make a differentiation between the 4S and the iPhone 5 and that difference should be the A5 chip. I think the 4S will continue to use an A4 with some upclocking. There’s so many ways Apple can go at this so speculation is a waste of time.

  7. Looks like a slightly improved and cheaper iPhone 4 and a more improved iPhone 4S. Both built on the same iPhone 4 foundation. That’s ok but not good. With this much time Apple should be coming out with an all new phone as the iPhone 5. People are expecting more.

  8. my vote goes to 2 iPhones … 4s will be same form factor 3.2 screen with additional chip for NFC. iPhone 5 will be the new form factor with 4 inch screen which will serve as pointer to future iPhones.
