Detailed aluminum and glass iPhone 5 mockup created (with photo and video)

“Based on CAD designs, hardware components, several leaked hints, cases and recent, believable mockups we created a three-dimensional computer model,” BENM.AT reports. “This virtual model was then used to build a very detailed, true prototype that you can hold in your own two hands.”

“The process to create this prototype is the same that’s used to create the iPad. The back was machined from a sold block of aluminium, which was later treated with glass pearls to get the same slightly rough touch that we already know from the iPad,” BENM.AT reports. “This prototype is only 59.94 mm wider than the current iPhone 4, but with a height of 109.98 mm it’s also just a bit thinner than its predecessor. We already talked about the teardrop design. We took a really close look at the most recent leaks to gather as much information as possible on how the upcoming iPhone might look like from the side. You can clearly see the teardrop style, with a thickness of 6.86 mm at the top and only 5.33 mm at the bottom.”

“Even though our prototype is a bit wider than the iPhone 4 (59.94 mm vs 58.6 mm) the design, in combination with the larger 4 inch touchscreen makes it more compact and easier to handle,” BENM.AT reports. “Thanks to the rounded design it also feels much nicer while holding it in your hand. Compared with an iPhone 5, the old phone even looks and feels a little chunky.”

MacDailyNews Take: It’s come to this. Only Apple could inspire such an endeavor.

  1. Maybe you could take some of the wasted time, effort, and money to create something that no one cares about or is remotely impressed by to go feed a hungry person or something. People are basically scraping the rim of Apple’s toilets for attention.

    1. Maybe you could take some of the wasted time and effort spent posting on this forum and instead volunteer at a soup kitchen or homeless shelter?

      See how this works?

Go preach to someone stupid enough to listen to your bleeding heart BS.

  2. Early on, you state that “This prototype is only 59.94 mm wider than the current iPhone 4”. That would be over two inches wider, which is obviously not correct. Using the numbers from later in the article, I believe you meant to state the difference as 1.34 mm.

      1. It’s just a simple typo – in one part of the article they say the prototype is 59.94 mm *wider* than the iPhone 4, then later they say the *total width* of the prototype is 59.94 mm.

Looking at the picture, it’s obvious that the prototype isn’t nearly 60 mm wider than the iPhone 4.

  3. Well. uhmmm – just might be.

Got to say – I think the HOME button mentioned seems sweet.
I hope the iPhone5 is tapered more of a wedge shape.

Note with regards to look… looks like an iTouch and seems slim enough – and for good measures – it does not look like the samsung galaxy at all but in line with the Apple original for legal purposes too.

Happy – well – if this is really is how iPhone5 will look I’m luke warm here.

Is that any reason to ho-hum – no – I like Apples simplicity – it does not need to look any better. I like what it does.

SO HOPES to me HAPPIER on what voice can do.

    1. Oh, yes. Real German. The way educated Hoch Deutsch is spoken on the street. He speaks it with a native intonation and pacing. He is so good he has “Sprachgefühl.”

I closed my eyes and I thought I was back on the streets of Berlin.

  4. Now, I like this bit of speculation (which is not really a “prototype”). It’s SMALLER than the iPhone 4, not LARGER like whatever is supposed to fit on those cases being sold in China.

However, I find it hard to believe that all the parts, including the battery that is needed to drive a slightly larger display and A5, would fit into THAT ridiculously thin case (that tapers even thinner).

And if the entire back is aluminum, doesn’t there need to be an a portion that is transparent to radio waves (like the iPad with 3G)? Also, if the antenna is no longer part of the external case, it would take up even more of the very limited internal space.

SO, I think it will look somewhat like this, except it will use the current size Retina Display, be only slightly thinner than iPhone 4, NOT be tapered, and somehow incorporate the antenna into the outer case.

Couldn’t this guy just wait 5 more days? 🙂

    1. “And if the entire back is aluminum, doesn’t there need to be an a portion that is transparent to radio waves (like the iPad with 3G)?”

Okay, I’m just going to throw up the first that came into my mind without thinking….

… could it be made of LIQUIDMETAL? =D After all, the iPhone 4 was already a testbed for that tech.

  5. Anyway, the new iPhone will be not “metal unibody” (metal could be tolerable only with 2G/GPRS signals, not 3G or anything faster in cell technolopgy, so Apple had to say goodbye to metal with iPhone 3G and later). Some parts might be in metal, but hardly “unibody”.

    1. It’s odd you say that. In New York City, Koreans and Chinese certainly speak fluent and often eloquent English and since many of them have gone to American schools since they were children (also many who were adopted as babies by American families) it really doesn’t seem that unusual at all. Since we have quite a few popular Asian newscasters and reporters, I guess it’s just natural for me to think that way. That Asian dude could have been raised in Germany. He certainly sounded very natural and spoke the language with ease.

  6. I wish the screen was even bigger. I want 4.3 inches. But I’ll take 4 inches over 3.5 any day of the week Navigating the OS, viewing web pages, typing, watching video, etc. will all become immensely better. Those who complained about having an iPhone with a larger screen will eat their words after holding and using one.

  7. Sweet Baby Jesus, they’re still going with this design. As several people have said, how is an aluminium back going to help radio transmission when Apple dropped an all aluminium back after the first iPhone proved to be inefficient an was replaced with plastic then glass for the 3G/4G models. And where, exactly, is a battery coming from that will fit that tiny space and can also power all the functions of an iPhone on a day-to-day basis with no loss of performance. Does anyone know if Liquid Metal is radio transparent, because that’s the only way I can see Apple going with a metal back. I really think this is bogus.

    1. Since it has been reported that Apple has been testing using curved glass for the “iPhone 6” screen, how about the possibility that they might be retaining a (radio transparent) glass back, but making it curved similar to the aluminum case predicted instead?

      Just sayin… 🙂

  8. Hmm, I think I would like to count the days for an real iPhone 5 release, too many rumors about the iPhone 5 mockup, this one seems different from the one I saw in iFunia news blog, and there are more mockups, so just wait and see what the real iPhone 5 look like.

  9. Now, I’m thinking, possibly, we are looking at a mock up of the new iPod with 3G with the larger screen for gaming.. This I’m guessing will be introduced alongside the iPhone 4S which will primarly look like the iPhone4 with a few teaks. The 4 inch screen will be introduced with the new iPhone 5 with 4G next year. I’m hoping I’m wrong because my wife’s 3G is getting old!

  10. i hope that’s NOT the design. honestly. i like the curved back, but it’s hard to plug the connector into the iPad 2 that i have. i do NOT want another device that has a curved edge like that if it’s got the same kind of connector. bad design. with the funny clunky way that the plug fits into the iPad 2. i can’t imagine that apple will keep using such a badly designed connector for a round edge.
