Amazon Kindle Fire vs. Apple iPad 2 vs. Barnes & Noble Nook Color

“Clearly, Amazon’s just-announced Kindle Fire isn’t designed to compete head-to-head with the iPad 2 on specs alone, but that doesn’t mean consumers won’t be cross-shopping the two this holiday season — and that means a comparison is in order,” Chris Ziegler reports for This is my next.

“Of course, Barnes & Noble’s Nook Color is a more direct competitor, so we’re throwing that in as well,” Ziegler reports.

MacDailyNews Take: With a screen just 45% of iPad’s size and dependent upon a half-baked, highly-fragmented, insecure OS that’s subject to dozens of patent infringement cases around the world and suffering from tremendous tablet AppLack™, Amazon’s thick Kindle Fire ought to be even cheaper than $200.

  1. In keeping with the precedent initiated by Samsung, Apple ought to complain about the graphics in the article posted by This is My Next. The 7″ Kindle Fire and 7″ Nook Color look close to the same size as the 9.7″ iPad 2, just a bit narrower (16:9 format). Surely this is criminal! 😉

  2. I can’t believe that article. They photoshopped the Kindle to make it look like the same size as the iPad! OMG. That’s a lawsuit waiting to happen. OMG! Falsification of evidence!

Where have I heard this before? 😉

  3. Some of the comments on the linked article praise the as yet unreleased Fire saying that it is similar in specs with th iPad 1. Yep, no cameras, and it is a tablet. End of similarities. Less than 1/2 the screen size. 1/2 the memory of the low-end iPad. Severe AppLack.

Plus, iPad 1(what I have) will be 2 years old before you know it. Way to compare to old tech

However, I do see the Fire being the first viable non-iPad tablet. Like the 2007 iPhone, it could be improved and expanded on and become a contender. Amazon has the customer base and content. For now, android manufacturers should be scared. A few years from now, MAYBE this thing will even still be around and be an option for those people who simply refuse to buy Apple.

  4. This tablet will actually be very interesting to see how well it is adopted. Amazon is pricing it VERY low, and if you noticed, Amazon also dropped the prices on the other Kindle devices as well.

    Can you say, “Loss Leader”?

Amazon doesn’t make that much off of each song, movie, or book it sells, so it will be interesting to see just how long it can maintain the Fire if sales of media don’t jump up quickly.

    1. A Tata Nano is CONSIDERABLY cheaper than the BMW M5. Buy a Nano and a Bimmer, then tell me what you prefer to drive.

Heck, I can buy a Yugo for $75.00, but I’d rather spend $30,000 on a decent car.

Cheaper doesn’t=better, it’s time people buying tech wake up.

      1. That’s the thing though – our worldview is all about instant gratification. “Pfft! I don’t care how much I’ll save down the road, how much will I save now?” is what today’s customer says. Same goes for fast food, tv dinners, etc.

  5. The Amazon tablet will NEVER touch the iPad. Rather, it will destroy just about any other android tablet. Because, for $200 it has the support of books and movies from the amazon store, and cloud sync.

What’s really interesting here is that the Fire seems to be made ONLY for content consumption, unlike the iPad which is powerful enough to create content. People who have recently bought computers will buy a Fire because they are cheap enough to buy ALONGSIDE a computer. They will consume some content, but in the end they will only become accustomed to the Tablet. Then, when they go to throw away that $500 windows POS they bought, they will seriously consider shelling out the same amount for a device that does what a computer does, but is in the more familiar “tablet” form. Namely, the iPad.

Amazon’s Kindle Fire is fantastic because it will do two things: Kill the half-baked android knockoffs of the iPad, and all the other wannabe devices. Then, it will eventually contribute to people buying an iPad. No iPad user would move to a Kindle Fire, but Kindle Fire users WILL upgrade to that iPad down the line.

    1. It will be a histry like HP’s

But just wonder what will happen when AMAZON is trading well above 100pe. If FIRE is not turn into inferno then AMAZON share price will crash. It will effect the whole market hope it will not happen and Kindle Fire survives.

  6. I believe that tablets are only desirable if they’re killer like the iPad with room for growth- i.e. apps. Apple’s got that, and Android sucks. Amazon’s tablet is a cheal toy, yes- but so far- with one really fatal flaw- no 3G. Why cart around a compromised 7 inch tablet when you can use your phone, which has more? Otherwise, it’s the iPad or a cheap notebook. Until there’s wifi everywhere, an 8G watered down mutation won’t fit into any niche- it’s not even a good e-reader.

  7. They forgot to reveal the Fire was also missing a compass, accelerometer, power cable, iTunes and Mac connection kit.

Also what is the issue with Silk, isn’t it just like Opera? It is not a ‘plus’, but a compromise due to low machine specs.

    1. I just looked over the iPad 2 specs. Here is the full list of items that the Kindle Fire as of right now, does not list or mention:

      iPad 2 includes:

      ▪ User-configurable maximum volume limit

  8. Fire is a nice updated Kindle. Kindle has a place. If am going to be sitting at the beach or pool reading books and mags, I’d rather take along “cheap” Kindle than a really attractive (to steal while I’m not looking) iPad. iPads are irresistible to light fingers; Kindles, not so much. So far, I own neither. Maybe Christmas.

  9. I am sure you are right Spark. My friend left here Kindle on her beach blanket when she went to the bathroom. And sure enough, like you know, when she returned there were three Kindles on her blanket. But then again she was at the Santa Cruz beach, playground of Silicon Valley.

  10. I know some people who will buy the Kindle Fire.

They comment regularly in places like Zdnet:

    their comments go like this:

“I bought the Dell Streak, it stank, so I bought a Maylong but the wifi died at 8 feet, so I bought a JooJoo but it was crap, so I bought a Galaxy Tab but it didn’t have honeycomb so I bought a HP Slate but the Windows desktop OS on it was a pain so I bought a Xoom but it was slow and the 10 hr battery dies after 6 hrs so I bought the Rim Playbook but couldn’t access my email easily so I bought the HP WebOS tablet but it’s got no apps so NOW… I’m going to get the Amazon Fire… and I am PROUD I will NEVER NEVER buy an Apple product because Steve Jobs is a jeans wearing stuck up slob and I’m too clever to SPEND TOO MUCH MONEY on Apple’s expensive products… “.

    1. Ha, now you know how big the “anti-Apple” business is and how it works. I have a good friend, Apple fan from 1990, and that’s basically how he makes his money: “Selling to short sighted”.

I have used several of the 7″ Androids, some of them prototypes, they really are like 3 wheeled cars, which kind of work and you can call them cars, but in real life they are a different story.

BTW, missing a camera is a major problem, not only you need them for the Bar Code apps, but you should be able upload sales ads with pictures.

    2. Whenever I would read a post where someone talks about spewing soda onto their keyboard after reading a funny post, I would think “Yeah, right.”

That was until I read davewrite’s post just now.

Fortunately, I’m at work, so the keyboard I just trashed was a cheapo Dell.

  11. The article also leaves out the fact that the Fire was designed by the same group that designed the blackberry Playbook. I’m sure the sales of this plasticy PoS will be nearly the same as well… LoL
