Apple’s iPad owns 80% of North American tablet market; Analyst claims Amazon tablet can challenge iPad

“Apple’s iPad captured 80% of the tablet computer market in the US and Canada in April to July, a report has said,” BBC News reports.

“The iPad accounted for six million of all 7.5 million tablets shipped in North America during the second quarter of 2011, according to research group Strategy Analytics,” The Beeb reports. “It described Apple as a ‘formidable market leader.’ Yet it added that Amazon – which is expected to unveil its own tablet this week – could become a big challenger.”

MacDailyNews Take: Oh yeah, based upon what, exactly?

The Beeb reports, “‘Provided the pricing, screen size and hardware design are right, Amazon can be one of the main challengers to Apple’s dominance,’ said Neil Mawston, director at Strategy Analytics.”

MacDailyNews Take: That’s quite a handful of provisos to go along with your vapid and idiotic ‘analysis,” Neil. And you left out operating system, security, a vibrant third-party ecosystem, and a vast library of apps, to name but a few.

The Beeb reports, “The continuing popularity of Apple’s iPad comes despite its incompatibility with Adobe Flash software, meaning that users cannot view a large number of online videos.”

MacDailyNews Take: Bullshit. “H.264 is currently the dominate native video format and continues to be broadly adopted,” Mefeedia reported in June 2011. “The growth as a percentage has further slowed since February but overall adoption is increasing.”

The Beeb continues, “On Monday, Apple declined to comment on reports that it had cut orders for iPad parts from its suppliers because of falling sales. The study by an Asian analyst of US bank JPMorgan Chase said several suppliers had indicated that Apple had reduced its orders by 25%.”

MacDailyNews Take: The Beeb report left out one minor detail: Those “iPad cuts” were later that day refudiated by JPMorgan Chase’s US analyst himself: JPMorgan analyst Moskowitz: Report of Apple iPad cuts by JPMorgan Asia staff not view of U.S. team – September 26, 2011

MacDailyNews Take: The Beeb must think their audience is stupid. And, they might be right, since they continue funding it.

  1. And they misspelled the name… It’s “Boob” not “Beeb”… Thank God for the idiots who believe these guys …. Allows the stock manipulating analysts to make me money… Read the ” rumor” reports correctly and you can too!!!! Sold Apple at $420…. a week ago… Just bought yesterday at $399 … And it’s already back up to $406.. in one day… Who needs dividends…

  2. Here lemme fix that for ya

“The iPad accounted for six million of all 7.5 million tablets shipped in North America during the second quarter of 2011. *and 6 million of the 6,000,090 that actually sold in G2-2011*

    There, all corrected

  3. Another correction

“The continuing popularity of Apple’s iPad comes despite its incompatibility with Adobe Flash software

Should read The continuing popularity of Adobe Flash comes despite it incompatability with any and all mobile devices such as phones, tablets, and iPads.

  4. The Amazon tablet may be successful, as a product. But it will be unrecognizable as “Android.” Amazon took an older stable version of Android as the starting point, and customized it to tie it to Amazon’s services, such as getting ebooks from the Kindle Store, music from Amazon’s MP3 store, and apps from Amazon’s app store. It’s like a “printer” that gets filled with Amazon’s “ink.” So, I think it will probably be popular with people who like the current Kindle.

I don’t think it will reduce the growth of iPad sales. Customers who want iPad will still buy an iPad. If the price is low enough, people who would NOT have paid for an iPad (the $99 TouchPad fire sale crowd) may buy it. In the long run, that may help Apple by creating new tablet users who will later “upgrade” to an iPad. And I don’t think Amazon will mind either, because those are customers of Amazon’s content who will continue to use Amazon’s services… on an iPad.

    1. Please, EVERYONE! Go to a store and play ANY Flash video on a faux iPad. Watch how POORLY Flash plays. Then go read the stats about how much CPU Flash devours, and therefore how much battery life Flash devours. Then consider that HTML5 is here and now and NO ONE needs Flash. Then celebrate. 😀

  5. BBC = British Brainwashing Corporation.

As a Brit, I’m saddened to see this once bastion of impartiality become the mouthpiece of our political masters and the security services. Lord Reith is turning in his grave even as I write 🙁

    =:~)

  6. It’s this simple:
“Amazon – which is expected to unveil its own tablet this week – could become a big challenger.”

NO. Wednesday the 28th will tell the tale. We’ll all be wondering why the frick some dumbass TechTard journalist ever thought it would be more than just a nice color Kindle. 😳 Tsk, tsk.

  7. Amazon tablet is designed to fight the upcoming color nook 2.
Amazon is not stupid, they have seen the positive press and reviews of the color nook as an inexpensive hackable android tablet.
They will release at a low cost hoping to make the money back through deeply integrated amazon product tie in-kindle, amazon app store, music store, video(?).

  8. The Amazon tablet is made by the same company that built the Rim playbook. It is the same 7 inch form factor, but with a slower cheaper chip. It really won’t compete directly with the iPad.

If Amazon introduce it at $250 it may wind up causing the sale of a higher than usual number of heavily dicounted kindles.

  9. MDN Take: “The Beeb must think their audience is stupid. And, they might be right, since they continue funding it.”

No, we’re not stupid, we just don’t get a choice about funding the BBC if we want to have a TV in the house. If I were to choose not to pay my TV licence, I would be prosecuted and end up with a criminal record.
