Apple settles with Queens stores over knockoffs

“Two stores in Queens, New York, accused of peddling unauthorized Apple Inc. accessories have agreed to hand over all products in their inventories bearing the word ‘Apple’ or any of the company’s ubiquitous trademarks,” Jessica Dye reports for Reuters.

“The proposed settlement, lodged in Brooklyn federal court on Thursday, would resolve a trademark-infringement lawsuit filed last July against Apple Story Inc and Fun Zone Inc, two stores in the Chinatown section of Flushing, Queens, that sell cases, headsets and other accessories for Apple products such as the iPhone, iPad and iPod,” Dye reports. “The two stores maintain they have not violated any Apple trademarks.”

Dye reports, “According to a court filing from Apple, the design of the unauthorized iPhone and iPod cases sold by the two stores mimics the trademarked iPhone and iPod designs and includes the phrase: ‘Designed by Apple in California. Assembled in China.’ As part of the proposed settlement, Apple Story has agreed to change its name, which Apple contends is too similar to its “Apple Store” trademark. It has also agreed to remove an oversize iPhone-shaped window display.”

    1. I think you need a new word for those who sell counterfeit goods. Shysters, however you spell it, regrets to Jews or lawyers, usually both. Neither seems appropriate here, though I can’t offer an appropriately snarky substitute. I’ll have to leave it to my fellow MDNers.

They’ve never let me down before…

  1. @Mike I think you might want to rephrase your statement. Perhaps you left something out of what you wrote given that the word “regrets” means “feels sorry about”. I hope you were not trying to say that that word refers Jews or Lawyers because that would just be plain rude. My wife and I are both Jewish and she is a Lawyer by training, but neither of us are people who fit that awful stereotype. Besides, the article was talking about stores in the Chinatown section of Queens not the “Little Jerusalem” section. 🙂
