“The US Patent and Trademark Office officially published a series of 13 newly granted patents for Apple Inc. today and one was a real stunner,” Jack Purcher reports for Patently Apple.
“Today’s report focuses on this advanced 3D display and imaging system that packs one hell of a wallop. Apple’s patent covers a wild 3D system that could generate an invisible space in front of the user that could allow them to work with holographic images or project their hands onto a screen in front of them to manipulate switches or move pieces of virtual paper or parts of a presentation,” Purcher reports.
“One could only image how this could be applied to 3D gaming, business or medical applications in the future,” Purcher reports. “This is Apple’s second major revelation about such an advanced 3D system and many supporting patent applications would suggest that the system is progressing quite well in Apple’s research labs. The good news, is that future iOS devices will be one of the drivers behind this new beast.”

Wow. I know it’s down the road, but it’s still a wow moment. It’s really one of those post PC moments. With news of the scanner maybe coming to ios devices, it kind of shows us how the evolution of today’s patent is working into a path to achieving the final goal of the holographic or 3d display. Go Apple.

This is why we have all these stupid patent disputes right now. You should have to have a working prototype before getting a patent. So basically apple patents this, sanding will actually invent and make the technology. Then we will see them battle it out in court amazing.
How do you know Apple doesn’t have a working prototype? Not being rude, simply asking because I don’t know.
There was some wild iPhone 5 ideas floating on the net… One might have been ahowcases here where the device could project a presentation on the wall… But also holographic keyboard positionalble and useful an Samsung says iPhone is in cool.

People are missing the fact that this patent was filed in 2005, the same year the xBox 360 was released and well before anyone at Microsoft was considering a Kinect like interface.
Exactly. This is also used for interactive presentations and much more. Kinect is a Wii copycat, period.
