MobileMe to iCloud transition gives users 25GB storage through June 30, 2012

“With the MobileMe to iCloud transition service launched for developers tonight, Apple has revealed what it plans on doing with existing MobileMe accounts moving over to iCloud,” Arnold Kim reports for MacRumors.

“During the transition, Apple has promised to keep existing MobileMe accounts active until June 30, 2012. What wasn’t entirely clear was how the storage requirements would shift over to iCloud. Current individual MobileMe customers have 20GB of storage included in their yearly plan,” Kim reports. “Apple has decided to move this one-to-one over to iCloud and is automatically signing up MobileMe users to the 20GB (+ 5GB free) tier plan in iCloud at no charge.”

Yes, but all this 25gb can do is store documents that support cloud syncing, it’s not the ” upload anything you like” storage solution that iDisk was, and like dropbox is.

So for instance I can’t upload 10 Indesign documents at home and then download them at work, or upload a 10mb PDF and send a link to someone else to download it.

If I’m wrong then someone can gladly correct me.

  Docs that support cloud syncing don’t take up any of your quota, the same way that music purchase from iTunes won’t. The 25 GB is yours to use as you want.

There is a 5 GB freebie for MobileMe users, whenever iCloud starts. That lasts until the end of next June. Then you have to pay for the 20 GB or drop it.

Before that time, we all have to figure out how much of the limited iCloud storage services we all will need and shift all the other storage elsewhere, such as Drop Box and / or web hosting services if we had MobileMe hosted websites.

Beats me why Apple are dumping so many MobileMe services except for the fact that WebDAV proved to be so damned slow and buggy and stagnant as a standard.

Actually, the 25GB is NOT yours to use as you want, unless you are a legacy MobileMe user who will still have iDisk until next June. For the rest of us, and for everybody after June 30, 2012, unrestricted cloud storage from Apple is dead, dead, dead. Your iCloud storage, whether 5GB or 25, can only be used for sandboxed data or document storage by applications that use the iCloud programming interface–currently, just the iLife and iWork components. Those documents and data DO count against your storage limit.

The two exceptions are (1) for media purchased through iTunes, because those songs and shows are not duplicated in each iCloud account, but are downloaded on demand from the central iTunes Store database, and (2) for the pictures that you have taken within the last 30 days that are stored in Photo Stream. If you subscribe to iTunes Match, your $25/year is buying additional storage for your ripped CDs. All other data, like your Pages, Numbers, and Keynote files, apply against your iCloud storage limit (whether the basic 5GB or whatever more you have paid for). Since iCloud data and document syncing is either on or off, as far as I know you cannot pick and choose which documents will require storage. Either everything goes up to the cloud, or nothing does.

Once the paradigm is extended to iMovie, how long do you think it will take until your synced files exceed 5GB and you have to purchase extra storage?

  Exactly right Txuser, I’m sure that this aspect is overlooked by most.
  
  iCloud storage is not the same as iDisk storage, you can only use it from apps that support it and from within those apps.
  
  It’s not going to appear on the desktop for you to copy files to like it was before.
  
  Giving us 25gb of space is irrelevant, as iDisk won’t exist when iCloud launches.
  
  I really don’t think mist will get this until iCloud us launched and we get forums filled with “WTF-where is my iCloud disk!”

What about our email accounts with MobileMe? I’ve got a legacy @mac.com address and my wife has the silly @me.com address. Will email services continue in iCloud?
