RUMOR: Motorola prepping iPad-sized tablet with 2048 x 1536 display

“Motorola is working on 4:3 format tablet… It gets better, the prototypes are out and our sources who have actually played with one of them claim that it’s a 4:3 format device with a 2048×1536 screen,” Fuad Abazovic reports for Fudzilla.

“The sources continue that the tablet is significantly thinner than Xoom and that it was powered by Ice Cream Sandwich,” Abazovic reports. “The tablet might be out even this year and the source didn’t knew what kind of chip is inside, but he had reminded us that Motorola works closely with Nvidia, so this tablet might end up with Tegra 3, Kal-El inside.”

MacDailyNews Take: Moto could use 4096×3072 displays and they’d still sell like snotcakes.

        1. Just my 2c….

Clarity is function of pixel density AND distance viewed from eye.

The iPhones retina display is approximately 104000 pixels per sq. inch. Since the iPhone is viewed at the same distance from the eye as an iPad or other “pad” the comparison is then to this 104000 ppsi number.

With the rumoured info of the motorola device, it will have approximately 67000 ppsi. if the display is similar in size to the ipads 8.5″ by 5.5″.

          So the bottom line is:-

          1. The eye WILL be able to see the difference, (assuming a good normal eye)
          2. Motorola display will still be less clear than the retina display of iPhone4.
          3. Motorola display will still be less clear than the rumoured future iPad3 retina display.

      1. Very much depends upon the size of the screen and at what distance you hold it. You won’t really notice 1080p unless you have 20/20 vision and you hold your iPad about 1 foot from your eyes, whereas 720p will go out to 2 feet (for your eyes to maximize the visual quality of the images).

Probably the bigger issue than resolution is battery life, as 1080p files are significantly larger than 720p files, and powering screens which can handle 1080p takes more battery life than 720p screens.

Like anything else in a computer, it’s all a compromise. Apple seems to be able to best deliver on these compromises, particularly in the battery life/thinness/lightness/screen resolution abilities.

    1. Actually human eye can differentiate up to 12k resolution depending on how far are you from the source. In fact scientist were only able to check up to 12k because they didn’t have videos with higher resolution than that.

    2. You may be right, but what the human eye can or cannot see depends greatly on whose eye you are talking about. Many people claim that they can’t tell the difference between 720p and 1080p on a big-screen tv, but to me the difference is as clear as night and day. Broad generalizations about what the eye can see are highly subjective. A better test, actually, would be to determine the screen resolution at which “jaggies” become obvious to the average, untrained eye. Of course, that resolution, whatever it is, will vary according to the size of the display.

  1. “The tablet might be out . . . the source didn’t knew what kind of chip is inside . . . so this tablet might end up . . . .”

Gawd, but I do adore rumorware! It’s just as good as vaporware but bears the imprimatur of real-life tech writers, analysts, gossips, FUDmeisters, dreamers, fantasizers, schizophrenics, and the like.

Long live those who see what is NOT and say ‘WHY NOT”?

    1. Of course. That’s because they knew Apple was right all along, but that they couldn’t compete with it, so it was much easier to criticize Apple than to actually produce something that could compete.

    2. Apple shows the way on how things should be done. It lays out the specification and the form factor that every Tom, Dick and Harry Apple’s wannabees would have to imitate and interest consumers to buy their scrappy products in order to trick them into thinking that they are buying Apple’s products. Look at Android: it’s an Apple-inspired platform. If it hadn’t tried to be Apple-like nobody would be buying an Android product. Google’s idea that everything should be web-based went flying out of the window.

  2. Ice Cream Sandwich? What a joke. Even Intel’s “location” code names are better than this. At least apple picks big, powerful wild cats. Why don’t they just call the next release, “M&M” … “melts in your mouth, not in your hand … ”

    Please.

  3. “4:3 format device with a 2048×1536 screen … might end up with Tegra 3, Kal-El inside.”

Because regular people care about these specs. They care so very, very much.

  4. Xoon 2. Déja vu. Another FAILure in the works. More market dumping in its future.

Surely you’re getting the clue Motorola. Either actually innovate or get out of the market.

  5. The next big “display” move by Apple will be to go to two screen sizes for iPad, with the bigger one having a 12-inch diagonal screen. The smaller one will be slightly smaller than the current iPad, and MUCH lighter.

This move will coincide with Mac OS and iOS getting full resolution independence. What that means is that the GUI will be designed to make “resolution” irrelevant. The pixels will be small enough so that there is no such thing as a “native resolution.” The user will be able to adjust the size of GUI elements on the screen smoothly to any size within a practical range. So if eyesight is getting worse (or fingers are “fat”), make things larger. Or make things smaller to get more stuff on the screen. “Legacy” apps can run on the screen at any size, and new apps will take full advantage resolution independence.

Introducing a new screen size for iPad or iPhone would not cause “fragmentation,” because the OS is designed to accept any screen size within reason (there is no “standard” resolution). On the Mac side, pixel density can go beyond the current high of 130 PPI (or so) without the Menu Bar (and other current pixel-dependent GUI elements) becoming too small to be usable (they are near that limit already).

Coming is 2013. iOS 7 and whatever comes after two years of Lion. Total speculation based on no facts.
