RUMOR: Apple’s iPhone 5 to launch in September, iPad 3 to launch in October

“Taiwan-based companies included in the supply chain for iPhone 5 and iPad 3 have begun to prepare materials for the production of the two devices, which are likely to make their debuts in September and to hit the market in October, according to industry sources,” Yenting Chen and Joseph Tsai report for DigiTimes.

“The sources pointed out that Apple only plans to launch one model of the new iPhone, while iPad 3 has just recently been added to the production schedule with both set to be produced in small volumes in August and the volume will start picking up in September and October,” Chen and Tsai report.

“Players within Apple’s upstream supply chain have all recently increased their estimated supply volumes for the second half, indicating that Apple is set to attack with another wave of new devices, before its competitors become strong, the sources noted,” Chen and Tsai report. “Apple is considering designing an even thinner and lighter tablet PC with its panel resolution increasing to 250dpi, the sources added.”

  1. Apple’s not going to release the iPad 3 only 6 months or so after the iPad 2 was released. Plus, that product schedule has Apple dealing with a new iPhone and one month later a new iPad. That kills PR possibilities, as the iPad 3 would eclipse the iPhone 5 release.

iPhone 5 in September, iPad 3 in early spring 2012 (likely March).

      1. You maybe correct but consider this …..

Release iPad Pro for $599 or $699 and it has blah blah blah and is blah blah blah and one more thing, it does ????? Simply amazing !!!!!!

I mean what would stop Apple from introducing a high end model and iPad 3 next year with it’s standard thinner lighter faster theme at the $499 or maybe even $449 entry price ….. And then comes the iPad Pro Two next fall ……

        1. I agree. A Pro version is a possibility, though I would peg it at closer to $1,000 or more. There is lots of upside for Apple with this. On is simply to raise the ASP. keep selling the current models and add new, high end versions that sell for more.

  2. Ok, new iPhone is quite likely to come in September with new iPod touch.. This makes sense as everyone would know what the iPod was gonna be like based on the iPhone specs when they were releasing them separately.. But a new ipad (3) before the second one is even a year old just sounds ridiculous!

The White iPhone 4 delay forced their hand slightly but gave apple the opportunity to reshuffle release dates.. Ipad 3 to come out next year at similar times that it has been..

    1. There’s full on panic in Cupertino right now in light of the recent release of the HP TouchPad. It’s obviously 10x better than the iPad 2 so Apple will have to rush the iPad 3 out in September. Heads are rolling even as we speak.

In other news, in a little reported event, Chicken Little got crushed beneath the wheels of Steve Jobs’ Mercedes SL500 today.

  3. Let’s face it, folks: with the rapid evolution of technology, the pace at which we can produce new, emerging technology will telescopically accelerate to the point where a new device can be design, tested, produced and put on the market at faster and faster pace (think one new device every day.. not every 6mo), so please we’ll have to stop pointing at the past update cycles as they are going to become obsolete before our very eyes! wake up to the TEHNOLOGICAL REVOLUTION! —– Ghost in the Shell : “It can also be argued that DNA is nothing more than a program designed to preserve itself. Life has become more complex in the overwhelming sea of information. And life, when organized into species, relies upon genes to be its memory system. So, man is an individual only because of his intangible memory… and memory cannot be defined, but it defines mankind. The advent of computers, and the subsequent accumulation of incalculable data has given rise to a new system of memory and thought parallel to your own. Humanity has underestimated the consequences of computerization.” – the Puppet Master

  4. Why is the iPhone so late if it’s such an incremental update? Rather than worry about a slew of Android tablets that still can’t touch iPad 2, as DigiTimes keeps suggesting with this iPad 3 crap, Apple should be worried about the slew of new Android phones over the summer that CAN hurt iPhone 4. They picked a terrible year for the iPhone to extend its normal cycle.

Get ready for the stories of Android reversing iPhone momentum. The gains made from the Verizon iPhone are about to be wiped out instead of reinforced by a June release of iPhone 5.

    1. it’s the white iPhone that threw the timeline out of whack.

But apple could have decided that they want iOS 5 to debut on new hardware. so drop the white iPhone and the Verizon iPhone into the mix, and wait till the dust settles. announce iOS 5. then when the Android guys stop hyperventilating… Drop the iPhone 5 in their faces. Along with a new iPod touch.

  5. Further rumor has it that the new iPhone will NOT be the “iPhone 5” but a updated rendition of iPhone 4, most likely taking advantage of full 4G capabilities and faster Wi-Fi.

Also, considering the manufacturing restraints on the iPad 2, it is extremely likely that Apple will NOT release the iPad 3 as its manufacture ramps up. Instead it will collect a warehoused stockpile, which it RARELY does these days, in order to provide supply for the expected demand.

    1. Eh, the iPhone 5 will be 4G… the next iPhone 4 S (or whatever they call it) will be a 3G world phone to replace the two models they have now. It will still have the A4, but will be sold for cheap. Apple is still selling all they can make as will be mentioned at the next quarterly results.

The new “iPad” being released will be a 5″ or 7″ iPod touch, not an iPad. It will ship with the A5. They may also have enough production volume of a die shrunk A5 to update the current iPod touch as well.

The iPhone 5 will be released when a die shrunk A5 can be produced at an appropriate volume… possibly beginning of next year.

Next June (maybe sooner), Apple will release iPad 3 with A6 and retina display — Sales of the iPad 2 is just now beginning to ramp up now… it will carry them until next summer.

  6. The rumor back in the beginning of the year was that the iPad 2 was only going to be an incremental upgrade and the major update would be the iPad 3, which would debut in the fall of this year. Two updates in one year? Unprecedented, sure, but not impossible.

  7. Competition (Android) is hot so Apple must see the need for the release of the iPhone5 this fall. Better yet, introducing the phone onto Sprint and T Mobile. Perhaps iPhone5 “S” will release next year with 4G capabilities. I personally want a discounted iPhone4 this fall *fingers crossed*. I think an iPad 3 would be the nail in the coffin for android tablets, so very possible for Fall….but the most important thing to remember is the feeding frenzy that occurs during the holiday shopping season….these iOS devices are the ones Apple wants in peoples minds during that time of year…September announcements will be about the iOS and iOS devices.

  8. iPad 2 chips into the iPhone 5 just like iPad 1 and iPhone 4.

Gives them time to nail the manufacturing and specs for a decent jump in power that will entice new buyers and offer enough for some iPhone 4 early adopters to jump a year into their contracts but not enough to piss the rest of us off, just leave us a bit envious.

iPad 3 next year for the same reasons.

  9. This kind of wild speculation is not helpful. Sure, iPhone 5 and iPad 3 are in the works, so to speak. And it is getting to be about time for the new iPhone. But the stores still don’t have a reliable and complete stock of iPad 2. Talking about iPad 3 coming out before the iPad 2 stock stabilizes is silly.

  10. Buy AAPL now before the new products are released in September. Better yet buy the options at today’s price with Jan 2012 expirations and reap significant profits. It’s all about leverage.

  11. When the iPad2 came out most reviews said that it was more of an iPad1a and that if you already had iPad1 the changes didn’t justify an upgrade.

If that’s the case are we not overdue an upgrade to an all singing all dancing, maybe even some bells and whistles, iPad3?
