Don’t be fooled: Microsoft’s Office 365 basically useless on mobile

“The hype starts today, so watch out. Microsoft formally launched the long-promised Office 365 set of cloud services for using Microsoft Office, Exchange, Lync (for voice and video communications), and SharePoint in the cloud, available in a variety of subscription options,” Galen Gruman writes for InfoWorld.

“Even before the formal release today, Microsoft had been marketing Office 365 via emails advertising its capabilities,” Gruman writes. “If you got that ad, you no doubt saw how iPhones, iPads, BlackBerrys, and Android devices (and Macs) were all noted as compatible in the sales pitch for Exchange capabilities. You then saw in the rest of the promo Microsoft touting the rest of Office 365’s features’ mobile compatibility.”

Gruman writes, “Here’s the catch: The Office 365 ad doesn’t specifically claim that non-Windows platforms are supported beyond Exchange; it instead switches to the generic word ‘mobile’ in the descriptions of its other capabilities so that you infer that it does. Don’t be fooled.”

    1. I was just about to post a reply stating that the one exception to this is the brilliant, free MS iPhone app called ‘Photosynth’….only to find out that for some insane reason it’s been pulled from the UK iTunes store.

      Ergo; I agree!

    1. This certainly seems to be Microsoft’s standard way of shooting themselves in the foot. Over-promise, under-deliver – a sure-fire way to alienate end users.

But then, Microsoft’s “customers” are rarely the end-user. Most businesses and PC manufacturers – Microsoft’s real customer base – have little incentive to care about this kind of thing.

    2. And it wouldn’t be Microsoft if the product wasn’t available in “a variety of subscription options.” Anyone plan on getting the Dynamic Active Live Pro Ultimate Small Business option with Plus Pack?

  1. That headline at infoworld.com could have been “Microsoft basically useless” and it would saved electrons being pumped down my DSL and many photons being transmitted around the world.

It would also have been true to their customers and their investors.

      1. Even there, most of the people posting in “outrage” have never done any video editing in their lives, and are simply riding the coattails of that controversy for ulterior (anti-Apple) motives. You can’t expect those folks to stay on-topic.

    1. 1. Final Cut “Pro” X basically useless for *you*. FTFY.
      2. No.
      3. Thank goodness they still make Final Cut 7 for “professionals” like yourself – or whoever you happen to be referring to.

Because a couple of butthurt pros have tethered their existence to FC7 and can’t import their old FCP work or can’t output to tape doesn’t make it useless. Your comment, OTOH, fits squarely into that category.

  2. All you need to know is stated in the following line near the end of the article in InfoWorld:

    “…Office 365 design team (who admitted they weren’t concerned with non-Microsoft environments…”

In other words, MS built a product that is useless unless you are using actual product on a Windows PC. What a brillant way to expand your market.
