“On June 9, 2011, the US Patent & Trademark Office published a patent application from Apple that reveals one of the next chapters for playlist creation in iTunes,” Jack Purcher reports for Patently Apple.

“Instead of playlists being presented in text form, Apple is proposing the organization of your playlists into searchable Mosaic Icons that could be set in various grid arrangements of your choosing,” Purcher reports. “New navigational controls associated with the new iTune playlist icons will allow users to quickly navigate or browse through the items in the list without having to open a new view.”
Purcher reports, “To allow for this new form of graphical playlist design, Apple will have to either redesign iTunes or recreate a new Summary iTunes tab within iTunes that could present pages of your new playlists that are in mosaic icon form. Apple’s proposed icon system could also be technically applied to folders in a typical computer directory structure containing subfolders.”

You mean mosaic Tiles on iTunes? The other mob from WP7 will be here soon enough to accuse Apple of copying from Microsoft.
It was only a matter of time before Apple created a more touch friendly way of creating playlists on our iPads. If you’re like me and have more than 20 playlists, then you could appreciate being able to identify your playlist with a memorable set of icons rather than having to review the titles in Playlist 1-20. I like the idea and hope to see in the next year or two.
This can be great! 😉
I agree with you Jakob
iTunes is getting a little stale. No better time to upgrade the design than when they begin to promote iTunes in the cloud. They need to make it more appealing and functional. I use it less and less now because I’m bored with the latest music and the iTunes store isn’t interesting me as much. Creative Playlist creation is interesting if it’s a part of a complete overhaul.
