“Google has reportedly pulled several Android mobile applications that were lousy with malware from its official Android Market,” Richard Adhikari reports for LinuxInsider. “This follows a report earlier this week from Lookout Mobile Security, which claimed it found dozens of apps in the market that contained malicious code.”
“The suspect apps appear to be from the same developers who created DroidDream, the malware that hit Google in early March and was also discovered by Lookout,” Adhikari reports. “The latest malware attack has claimed between 30,000 and 120,000 victims, the mobile security firm estimates.”
“‘The Android Market allows developers to upload apps without first running them through an established screening process like those you might find at Apple’s App Store or when using RIM’s applications for BlackBerry,’ Fred Touchette, senior security analyst at AppRiver, told LinuxInsider,” Adhikari reports. “This latest attack is the second on the Android Market since March. The earlier attack, which launched the original DroidDream malware, forced Google to remove about 50 tainted apps from the market.”

MacDailyNews Take: Google’s ill-conceived, wannabe iOS rush-job strikes again.
Lesson: Get the real thing; don’t settle for inferior derivatives.
[Thanks to MacDailyNews Reader “Touch” for the heads up.]
Hay, we google are open and do no evil. Don’t you dare to criticize us. They are not malware, they are just opening your personal information to Internet like us.
But … But … But Android has more FREE apps!
It should be called the Android MAL-ket.
Haha … Mal Store!
Google should TradeMark the name b4 Micro$oft gets it.
Apple’s “Walled Garden” just keeps looking better and better…
Anyone else find it funny that after all these “walled garden” comments Apple decide their new HQ will look like this?
It’s a small price to pay for the wonderland of OPEN. Everything is open and free! You can do whatever you want! If you don’t like the way your phone works, just re-code it yourself! Tra-la-laa! Daisies! Unicorns! Woo!
Always remember: Android is OPEN. O-P-E-N. That’s the only thing that matters to consumers, right?
With today’s security knowledge, doesn’t Google’s approach to mobile apps seem utterly idiotic?
They are going to *have* to change this eventually, or the platform will end up 1,000 times worse than Windows.
1000 times worse than Windows is a number so big they haven’t given a name to it yet.
Don’t exadurate like that.
“exadurate”?? *sigh*
@althegeo
You are the biggest goddamn moron to ever post.
@boulder frog
Better a moron then an ASSHOLE.
At least althegeo had a comment (and maybe a typo) but at least he wasn’t degrading someone. For all you know English might be his/her third or fourth language. Come on, Smitty made his point without the juvenile remarks.
Uh, as of your post, the second to biggest…
Well, that’s not the exact definition of a “gogleplex”, (google it, 😉 but it’s close enough that we can start using it.
Actually they have—it’s called Graham’s Number, a number so vast that it’s impossible to write out a numerical representation within the confines of the observable universe even if each digit were to occupy only one Planck volume.
In turn, Graham’s Number is vastly smaller than Ballmer’s Number, which is the value of Ballmer’s IQ, expressed as a negative integer.
=:~)
Isn’t it interesting that the bloggers and tech journalist that slams Apple for every little thing is sooooo quiet with Google/Android/Malware infested POS ecosystem? Unsuspecting consumers duped into thinking that this is better that Apple ecosystem? Well, free is free, you get what you pay for, which is a POS!
These are the same people who think malware is NORMAL. Windows does that to a person…
I bet your right.
One halfass scareware trojan on a Mac and the media goes nuts. But they can spread like locusts in Windows and Android ecosystems – no one seems to care too much. Business as usual.
Gee, the Android fanboys seem awfully quiet. Whattsa matter, guys … Cat got your tongue? Hope you’re enjoying your open system.
Isn’t malware on an Android device redundant?
The sole purpose of Google’s existence is to sell ads and make $$ from it. I doubt Google care about malware in Android Market, otherwise Google will screen each submitted apps like Apple.
Open sounds good when it keeps some other group from interfering with what you want to do. But there is a flip side to that coin: “In order for evil to flourish, all that is required is for good men to do nothing.”
If you take the freetard linux fanboy segment (and wanabees) and add in the apple haters and the dumb-ass “I want a smartphone for freeeee” segment, you still can’t account for the android phones they have sold.
Do these other (presumably sane) people not realize what a piece of crap an android phone is? I think perhaps, it is all the idiot (apple haters) in the tech press that talk about these iphone wannabes like they were in the same league with the real deal.
However I also think after people realize what a piece of half finished, poorly thought out and poorly constructed crap they are now locked into (and how well real iPhones work) the tech press will have given up another huge chunk of their credibility.
My only question is, why are they willing to do it? They are informed enough to know the iPhone plays in a different league, but they go on to make up “antennagate” stories and basically prostitute themselves giving biased reviews rather than calling it what it is, a poor copy of an iPhone, that functions poorly, is difficult to operate properly, and is infested with malware.
(if anyone thinks the last couple batches of malware discovered in the android store are anything but the tip of the iceberg… I have some land in a great little vacation community in south florida I would like to sell you a lot in, I named the resort “subaqueous acres”. You’ll love it… trust me ;-))
I’m sure a few of them know well enough about what an Android phone is in relation to an iPhone.
I can’t be the only person on the planet that switched FROM an iPhone to an Android Phone.
I have not seen this latest list but has anyone seen the list of previous apps that had malware embedded?
You betcha man I’m going to rush right out to download apps with neat names written in Asian fonts that I can’t understand, or ones with sophisticated names like 几何战机_PewPew and “Hilton Sex Sounds”
LOL
I’m not even sure how you find some of this in the Android Market.
Google really should implement some kind of basic screening process to catch this stuff.
Completely stupid for companies to embrace Android for work. Worse if our governments starts using this POS for use.
