RUMOR: Apple to offer $200 off an iPad or free iPod touch in Back to School deals

Apple is set announce new Back to School deals at WDDC, according to a BGR tipster.

Qualifying students or teachers who buy a new Mac can get “either a free iPod touch or $229 towards the purchase of any other iPod,” Jonathan S. Geller reports for BGR.

“Our source also let us know that there might be something new in the works, as well… they heard that it’s possible Apple might offer students up to $200 off an iPad with the purchase of a new Mac,” Geller reports.

  1. No, it will not be $200 off a 32 GB iPad. Wishful, delusional thinking. It will be $200 off a 64 GB Wifi + 3G iPad, the most expensive one. Read the article again: “…up to $200 off an iPad”.

    1. Seems like you’re new to Apple. Over the last (at least) four summers, Apple’s “back to school” sales were pretty much the same — up to $200 worth of discount on ANY iPod with a purchase of ANY new (non-refurb) Mac. This was to clear the inventory ahead of the introduction of new iPods in the fall.

As for the iPad, it is just a new entrant into this arrangement. It is unlikely that there would be any restriction with respect to the model, as there never was before. The ‘Up to’ part (in the “up to $200”) referred to getting iPods that retail for less than $200. You can therefore get a Mac, together with a Nano (which is $150), and you’ll get nano for free, but no money back on the Mac, thus only $150 off on your order.

  2. Cancelled my online order of iPad2 to see if this pans out. Even if it’s 100-150 off for the wifi-only 16gb model, it beats paying full retail. “Friends with children are useful after all”.

    1. Asking them to do something dishonest like this, doesn’t show much friendship on your behalf. What sort of an example are you setting for their kids?

Obviously you don’t care. There is no need to respond.

      1. No…. Then use something that is desirable but with adequate supply, such iPod touch. That always made great sense to me because the timing of the offer was at the end of the run for the current iPod touch model. It got rid of any excess supply before the new model was released.

Using an iPad as “bait” to sell more Macs makes no sense. If anything, it should be “buy and iPad, get (up to) $200 off on a Mac” (if was “about selling Macs”). That would make every one of the numerous iPad customers (most of whom are current Windows users) consider buying a new Mac at the same time, while making full profit on every iPad either way.

  3. Hmmm: or $400 for a mid-range iPad2, even though they can’t manufacture enough of them at $600?

They must have another 10 million/month of manufacturing capacity coming online soon. (That’s about 4 per second for those of you keeping score at home.)

Or else this “rumor” is simply wishful thinking.
