Works good so far, but just noticed a problem. easy to fix but can be annoying.
I set up the account info on both my iPad and iPhone.
went to watch something on the iPad… said Exceeding the number of streams on the account….
Just setting up the iPhone counts as “streaming”
had to manually quit the apps on both the iPad/iPhone and all was fine.
so only 1 person/device can stream. kinda weak..
they need to adjust that. beyond that issue, works pretty damn good.

Apple needs to become the cable company. Imagine a service from apple where you get to pick the channels you want and pay monthly for only those. These channels would stream live and you can watch on your big screen through AppleTV, or through your iPad or iPhone over Wi-Fi or 3G. If you missed any old content, you can go back and watch these items since all content will be archived in the cloud – no need for a DVR. No need for multiple tuners. Please Apple make it happen – only you can do this. I hope this is part of iCloud.
My cable TV subscription is at the top of my budget cutting list, so I’m all for this. Apple or NetFlix – it doesn’t really matter. Ala carte television can’t come soon enough. Frankly, I like the NetFlix price point better. Season passes to television shows on iTunes are unreasonably high – a season pass to a running network show can cost you as much as your entire cable/sat subscription. If Apple can offer a low subscription price per show, I’m on board. I’d rather pay for the 3-5 shows I watch instead of the multitude of channels packed with worthless 24-hour a day reality TV crap.

Bandwidth limitations will be irrelevant in the near future.
How do you figure that? Bandwidth limitations are coming and will be the norm.

Troll and I are talking bandwidth throughput which is what causes the lag when switching channels. You are talking bandwidth metering which is the total amount of data being transferred. Although the total amount of data may be metered on some cell plans and some ISPs, throughput is definitely increasing in the future for both home and cellular data (ie 4G vs 3G and fiber vs cable modem).

I expect one is more likely to die in an airplane crash than to get sued for torrenting a couple series. Has anyone even been doing that recently? Music cartel (what were they called again? Remember them?) filed a few big suits in the last decade but if you ask me it was all for show- create a few headlines to try and impress upon everyone that it’s actually “illegal,” try and change norms like the lame ass ads in the movie theater. Truth is, nobody gives a rats ass about stealing from Hollywood, nor should they. And the lawsuit strategy will never work because suing your customers for $1000000s each for file sharing makes you looks like a total asshole. If they did it to more than a very occasional person they’d have an utter rebellion on their hands. No, only solution as with music is reasonably priced, convenient a la carte options to capture the $$ of those who are just too rich, lazy, or above-average respectful to steal. For the rest, pirating is here to stay and 99.999% of those who do will continue to get away with it.

Plenty of us would subscribe to a streaming on-demand HBO & Showtime service or buy current season passes show by show, but choose to not bend over and take another round of the cable cartel’s bundling antics.
If I could subscribe directly to HBO I definitely would and then cut it from my cable bill. I’m sure I’m not alone. I’m guessing there’s some sort of contract clause preventing HBO from doing this, or maybe HBO doesn’t want to cannibalize their cable side, thinking that people wouldn’t pay as much for the app subscriptions.
They probably don’t want cannibalization of their cable and DVD sales.
It’s also much easier to quit a subscription on the iPad then through your cable.
Also, I’m not sure how the contracts between the cable companies and HBO work, but I highly doubt they allow for HBO to stream their content without the cable companies consent (i.e. With ONLY a iPad/apple tv Subscription)
I am pretty sure the cable companies pay HBO more than the added fee they charge you for HBO. So you would probably pay more than the $10 a month that you get it from your current provider. But still you would no be paying for all the other useless channels as well.
Imagine a device where you choose (download) your own content channels (like HBO GO), and watch them on your schedule on any device you choose. Boom: a la carte television, and a major disruption of the cable/sat bundling distribution model.
Currently, HBO Go is authenticated to your cable company subscription, but that can change in the future. You can bet that technology like this gives content providers a better position in the next round of carriage negotiations.

it seems to me the time is ripe for a new TV over the web company producing its own news, drama, spottscasts etc.

Why doesn’t Cablevison have this service? Our bills are high enough and it would be a great feature for us iPad or iPhone users to have.
It says you can download it to multiple devices, but when I do it, it tells me it is already registered account. How do I go around this?
Does it work with Direct TV is you have HBO – I just signed up for it ?
