Apple patent application details new fitness center app

“On April 28, 2011, the US Patent & Trademark Office published a patent application from Apple that reveals various aspects of a newly advanced Fitness Center App that they’ve been working on for some time now,” Jack Purcher reports for Patently Apple.

“While Apple’s app is uniquely their own, they appear to be consulting with or at least including Nike into their program as one illustration lists ‘The Nike Training Club Class,'” Purcher reports. “Apple’s Fitness Center App is well designed to cover all aspects of a workout including stats gathered from next generation smart equipment right down to the inclusion of a unique social networking component that will work within a particular fitness center or within your city limits to help you find a workout buddy and/or to stir on competition to get you motivated. Apple’s new fitness center app is designed to work with your iPhone or iPod touch to provide you with realtime stats to keep you informed and on track.”

Purcher reports, “The focus of Apple’s patent is to provide the iPhone (or other wireless networked devices) with a single seamless fitness center oriented application that will connect to fitness center servers to access various services.”

  1. I can use all the motivation I could get at the gym and this sounds interesting. I think gyms need video training on the iPhone for newbies like me. I use the Nike + iPod program faithfully for 6 months of the year and it would be great if Apple could advance some of these motivating programs, even for in-home equipment.

  2. Nike Plus is great on the iPhone, however, the online component is a horrible Flash-y mess. If Apple is taking the lead then let’s hope they can get Nike to change the Flash heavy website.

  3. Ha, this is where Apple can eat RIM’s dust. RIM had richly afforded/awarded its users with the original Storm and Storm II (or whatever they were called) with the unique push to type “touch” interface. Many a muscles (fingers, knuckles, jaw bones, brains etc.) were required/built using those devices by all/both users who had committed/persisted with those devices.

It would have made more sense if I could type portions of this post like StormTard .
