“Apple this week posted a new job listing for the position of ‘Cloud Systems Software Engineer,'” Neil Hughes reports for AppleInsider.
“Discovered by AppleInsider, the full-time role at the company’s Cupertino, Calif., campus will join a ‘small team’ that is said to be building ‘the future of cloud services at Apple,'” Hughes reports. “That small team writes ‘software which forms the foundation’ for some of Apple’s ‘most exciting new products and services,’ the job listing reads.”
Hughes reports, “This week’s latest job listing from Apple comes only months after the company sought to add software engineers to its iOS development team with an emphasis on remote storage for data access. Cloud support is rumored to be a major component of iOS 5, the next major version of Apple’s mobile operating system for the iPhone and iPad. One report from March said Apple plans to release iOS 5 this fall.”

So we have Google building from the cloud to user interface devices, and Apple building from user interface devices into the cloud.
To seal the deal, I hear that during the interview Steve Jobs walks in dressed as Lando Calrissian and says, “You truly belong here with us among the clouds.”
I wonder how much George Lucas would want to license the name “Cloud City”? That guy will sell anything SW-related for the right price.

In order for cloud services to be effective, and have an Apple-approved level of user experience, the pipes that lead from users to the cloud will need to be improved. Otherwise it ends up being a slow mess of data transfer.

I wonder how Apple manages to conceal strategic plans such as cloud, which require experienced and skilled staff to execute. Not having management expertise in such a field in-house means advertising outside, which gives us hints, but very little of the whole picture. Once that senior manager is in place, they can slowly higher lower-level people, where they could find a lot of talent in-house. As these people vacate their old jobs, they can safely advertise outside for those, and nobody is the wiser.
I seriously wish they didn’t say “cloud” as this implies the microsoft/google experience of trying to do everything inside of a bloated html document full of java/flash/javascript.
Knowing apple though, I’m sure they won’t do that, they tend to scare you by saying something like that and then end up implementing it in a very nice way.
