First news story completely shot on an iPad 2 (with video)

MacDailyNews reader Mike McNeill, who works for Fox 4 (KBTV) in Beaumont, Texas, shot and lightly edited what is likely the first news story to broadcast over the air that was completely shot and edited on an iPad 2:

      1. Welcome Memetech!

Since this is your first post ever, here’s a piece of advice. Don’t post anything even remotely anti-Apple on this site. Actually it doesn’t even have to be anti-Apple. Simply praise a competitor and you will be eaten alive by some of these commenters.

        1. Don’t worry I’m as rabid as rabid as the next fan. Over twenty years of apple worship, including the hard times that tested my faith.
          🙂
And not my first post, my first “first post”

    1. Why the quotes around Fox “news” ZBeeb. You find the sycophants at NBC, CBS, MSNBC, CNN superior? Non-biased? Really? If you want news and opinions other then those copied from the State-Run media and dutifully reported, then you NEED to go to the only media outlet free of serious progressive/lib bias…. that would be Fox…

      1. I have this new Safari plug-in. it’s called AutoTruth. it’s very frustrating…

here’s what I want to say to MacMan:
“you’re the best! I wish I were your friend.”

irritatingly, here’s what it keeps insisting I really mean:
        “you’re an idiot. drop dead.”

  1. As an Apple loving, bagpipe playing, guy from Beaumont who is getting ready for St. Patrick’s Day I am thrilled to see both this story and how it was made. Way to go!

  2. It seems he recorded with the VGA camera…failure number one. He’s also terribly annoying, failure number 2. He used an iPad for a news story, great idea, could have been better.

  3. Shot on iPad2. Don’t know about “edited.” It’s all one long scene with no cuts. The couple of graphics had to have been added in at the TV station after the fact.

That said. Who knows. We may see TV stations completely replacing their expensive pro video equipment with iPads!

  4. Don’t get lost in the substance of the story or the reporter’s style or location.

The fact that this was shot on an iPad and processed on an iPad is huge. This is a watershed moment.

    Holy Cow!

    1. Yeah, this is going to be big with field reporters, I think. If an iPad is all they need to have, they can be more agile and post their stories right away. Just don’t expect it to replace the broadcast quality cameras quite yet…

  5. Jeez, liberals are like cockroaches, come from from everywhere when the lights go out. But turn on the Light, say “vote” and watch ’em scatter to Illinois!

    1. not really sure what this post is saying…more like a weak poitico trying to be cute, i guess….sounds like a couple of my pop’s drinking buds..loud, spew words but don’t have a clue…neway..the video…thumbs up for giving it a spin and getting it on air..and lighting in an all night 7-11 kind of place isn’t easy at all, having done a few shoots in that environment myself…

  6. You all make good points… I did use the VGA.. I was by myself, so need a monitor. I wish the front side cam was a little better.

The substance…well, you go where they send you.

They style…hey, part of my charm 🙂

Editing… not much, but did trim things up and take out a few dead spots.

Nevertheless, it’s a good start, and shows the potential of the device. It’s going to take practice to get really good at it. But this was a first attempt on a 90 mins deadline. You do what you can do… and in that situation, you do what you can. And in THIS situation, and no photog around, I grabbed the iPad and went with it. No prep, and little planning.

Now, with more them and an extra body there in addition to the reporter, sky is the limit.

    1. Mike, I think it was cool, and I’m not even a beer drinker. It certainly worked better than the old cell phone videos we see from time to time on networks. And the ability to frame yourself with an iPad opens things up. You are the innovator, so don’t worry about the couch potatoes trashing you from their parent’s basements. . . Too bad for the camera guys at your station. The GM will try to replace them all with iPads ;))

    2. Congrats on the first known newscast made with iPad 2! I’m sure it’ll get better with time but it seems like you’re off to a good start.

P.S. The jerks that posted above are not representative of the readers of this site.

  7. Apple needs to create a way for the camera app on the iPhone to transmit it’s stored video to an iPad without having to sync it to a computer. Can you imagine sending out people with iPhone 4s to capture video and then drawing it all into an iPad and editing it. It could change video journalism. I suggest shooting on the iPhone just because it’s camera is so much better and it’s easier to hold than an iPad.

  8. Sorry, but you can’t create content on an iPad. You have to use something like a Windows Slate to do that. iPad is only useful for consumption of content and not even good for that because it doesn’t support the world’s most important plug-in on the internet, Flash. No consumers or businesses will ever use an iPad and Apple will soon give up selling tablets and build netbooks instead.

  9. Once again we descend to the lowest common denominator. If this is the future of TV then count me out … Seriously, look at how crap the colours are – there’s no green – it’s all reds and blues, and the audio is peaking all over the place. Add to that the garbage framing and you realise why there are camera operators paid to shoot stories.

Just because you can do something, doesn’t mean you should.

    1. Had you read….you would have realized there was no camera man….just me holding the iPad. We will get ther w the sound and color, don’t worry. But to clear the reporter…me… was the operator. Not easy doing 8 things at once. it’s a first try. A little slack will prove to go a long way friend. 🙂

    2. Do you really think you would have gotten that great Irish beer review if the news producers had to use more than one guy? You think the camera work was the lowest common denominator? Now that Mike has paved the way, get ready for more in depth coverage of local cat shows and bake sales.

  10. It’s great to see you on the forum mike, and exchange with the other fan boys about the story. It doesnt compare to a camera crew butI am sure you’ll become a lot better with experience on the iPad and I congratulate you for trying.

  11. @Mike,
    Great job!!
Don’t listen to the losers on this thread criticizing–I doubt they could have done better in 90 minutes.
You innovated and got the job done. That’s what counts!
    Cheers.
