The adapter will work with your first iPad as well. It is my understanding that mirroring is the only thing that would NOT work on the first model. In other words, the local (built-in) display would go dark when you connect the device to the external screen. Multi-touch navigation then becomes rather unintuitive (touching one surface and looking at another… kind of like we do today with desktop mouse or trackpad…).
Not true. This will be video out only. It will work just like the current component cables. No games or other apps. Only photos, music, videos. It isn’t a second display but only works when outputting from specific apps.

Too bad. The “mirror” function rocks but Apple tends to keep certain features to enhance the desire of new devices. There may also be technical performance requirements and memory that the current iPad does not meet.
Someone, please find out if it supports 1080p60!
It will only output movies at 720p; not at 1080, although, it seems that the signal it outputs may be 1080p, which implies up-conversion of 720p video.
Let’s not forget, 1080p60 still does NOT exist as a HD standard (neither for broadcast/cable, nor for Blu-Ray). Its existence is very closely tied to 3D Blu-ray (essentially delivering alternating left and right images for a 1080p30 content).
the mirroring is cool, but it’s still a dongle (and needs a long HDMI cable!).
more interested to see what apps will be able to transmit for HDTV viewing via AirPlay – can that be mirrored too? that wold be fantastic.
Airplay has a tiny it of lag so the cable will be great for playing games on the big screen..
Isn’t every 1080p signal a 60Hz one?
Well, 1080p24, 1080p25, 1080p30 and 1080i50 are not.
Predrag… Hertz is a measurement of signal frequency, and is not the same as frames per second, which is what the 30 in 1080p30 means. And in case any one is wondering, standard broadcast television is 29.98 frames / second.
29.98 frames / second is more correctly the NTSC TV standard (used in USA) 25 frames/ second is PAL (Europe… and most of the world except US) while 24 is the standard recording speed for 35mm Movie Cameras.
50i or 60i are versions of PAL and NTSC in interlaced mode meaning the TV updates the picture on the screen 50 times for PAL or 60 for NTSC. Interlaced means that it does not update the whole picture but more like every other horizontal line. Though updating twice as often as 25 or 30 fps it seems like a complete picture.
As for the original question whether it support 1080 60p it will probably not. Most Apple products are limited to 30p and will only deinterlace video in 50i or 60i so that it becomes 25p or 30p. That is if you can even play interlaced video.
Is this a workaround for airplay not working with video as promised yet … Similar to the appearance of the bumper?

Uh..the combined CDMA/GSM isn’t a ‘fail’–Jobs announced it would be released for both ATT & VZ. Check it.
Grub, they are making two iPad versions.. one for Verizon and one for AT&T. CDMA and GSM aren’t combined they’re separate.
I think he meant one model that is both CDMA and GSM on the same chip so you can take it to which ever company suits your fancy that month. There doesn’t seem to be any evidence that it is a single chips. It does sound like it’s a specific model for each company.
So, with no Mirroring on the iPad 1, will the iPad + cable work with the Hulu app? It currently does not work with AppleTV.
Does the AV dongle work same way as Apple TV airplay? I have iPhone 4 and I can watch HD movies (720p) i bought from iTunes on my iPhone 4 then through Apple TV send it to my HDTV wirelessly and watch it in 720p.
Sorry but the device does not work. I tried with an iPhone 4 on two separate hd tvs and only got audio. I also saw numerous reports of similar results with iPad2s online. Clearly this is a flawed product and I will be in touch with apple to discuss.
im from europe and I am trying to watch nba game by using nba game time on my iphone 4..i’m using the hdmi adapter theres an audio but no video on my tv screen..But some streaming videos like youtube etc. works fine but nba game time doesnt..

I am having difficulty playing any videos on my 1’st generation iPad with this adapter. It will play my music videos, as well as, some cartoon TV shows that my daughter has on my iPad. However, once I try playing any videos that I purchased from Itunes, I get a message that pops up and says that it cannot play protected material. Some of the guys at the apple store says they dont know why I am seeing this issue. They said that it should be playing without a problem. Any Ideas?? I really dont feel like sitting here waiting on the Genius Bar to answer what may be a very simple question.
This is because iPad has HDCP incorporated into iTunes movies, apparently the only ones to see are in 480i (SD – which by definition canot be controlled by HDCP)

Danno Bonano, if you jailbreak your iDevice, you can mirror any app using an app/hack called display out. Can even select custom aspect ratios and such.
