Apple files trademark application for ‘Places’

“On February 24, 2011, The European Trademarks and Designs Office published Apple’s latest trademark application for the word ‘Places’ under application 009760141,” Jack Purcher reports for Patently Apple.

“Apple has filed their trademark under four distinct International Classes covering all manner of computer hardware, education and entertainment services and more,” Purcher reports. “Yet at the heart of this application, Places is primarily about online social networking services related to a social networking site and will assist in locating people using GPS on Apple’s mobile devices.”

Purcher reports, “Apple asserts a claim of priority based on Jamaican application number 56357, filed on August 23, 2010. Today’s European filing was made in London England by Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge UK LLP.”

  1. Rats! When I saw the word “Places”, I thought about Apple’s purchase of that mapping service company they bought. I thoughtbto myself, good-bye Google maps, and with Apple’s one year hold (or whatever) of The Beatles musi library in iTunes, what a way to tie a new maps service called “Places” with the song “In My Life”… “There are places I remember, all my life though some have changed. Some forever, not for better, some have gone and some remain. All these places had their moments…”… But then the article talked about Social Media, Dacebook stuff… Oh well…

  2. I’m trademarking ‘that’ which in my application refers to anything I choose. On a serious note I suspect that having chosen the itunes name has a lot to do with this more generic term, itunes was very clear and logical to start with but now slightly out of touch with reality but can’t easily be changed because of its familiarity and marketing clout.
