Apple’s iOS grabs 45% of European market share; nearly three times Android’s and BlackBerry’s shares

“Apple’s mobile phone operating system, iOS, is by far and away the most heavily adopted in Europe, even though it only appears on Apple devices. Its staggering 44.95 per cent market share is almost three times as much as Android’s, which comes in at 16.37 per cent,” Rik Henderson reports for Pocket-lint.

“The stats are part of Pocket-lint’s own new infographic, and are formed using StatCounter.com’s data on Mobile Phone OS saturation Europe-wide,” Henderson reports. “They are current, and are representative of ownership up to the end of January 2011.”

So, this is what happens when a country has the iPhone available on more than one carrier. I wonder what the same chart will look like for the US in 12 months? how about 24 months when all subscribers will have had a chance to pick a new phone?

Symbian is below even BlackBerry and Android, on the “home court.” Somehow, I don’t think Microsoft is going to help Nokia too much in this arena.

It’s interesting when you see the breakdown that the BB share is almost single-handedly maintained by UK. That’s borne out by my general observations. I think BB clearly targeted the UK (English speaking) and also we have a large banking/financial industry, which could account for the divergence from European statistics (and my Deutsch bank brother still refuses to get an iphone because it doesn’t have a ‘proper keypad’ . . . but then he *is* a philistine of the highest order).

How come every time a chart like this comes out.. every android fanboy screams Android has only been out a year or so…

yet, when a iPhone user says Android copied the iPhone, android fanboys love to scream that it has been around just as long if not longer.. interesting how that works.

I think it’s pretty clear that android is just an alternative for people that don’t like apple or they’re on a different carrier than AT&T. All I ever hear from some of my android using friends is how glitchy and battery draining it is.

Look at the numbers carefully… iOS has not grown – it’s still down from June compared to December. Android on the other hand has grown steadily. The numbers do not lie.

  I never get tired of you market share people. If you put an operating system on every device possible it’s going to own the market share. Just look at windows and Microsoft. Apple seems to be doing fine in the high end market. I think they’re happy there making all the money and laughing at people like you.

  Look at the numbers carefully. iOS has maintained a dominant market position in the face of numerous Android handsets. Android growth has been primarily at the expense of Symbian and Other. The more recent downtick in BB has benefitted both iOS and Android.
  
  iOS is strong in Europe. Apple is in an enviable position and has weathered every attack over the past few years with poise and restraint. Long time Apple fans know that even less than 10% of a market can be good, as long as it is the right 10%. Apple has the best 45% right now.

A BBC reporter went outside during the Android fest in Barcelona. He asked everyone which phone they had or would like to get. They all wanted or had an iPhone. No Android around in the wild.

44.95% seems quite impressive, but (in general) people who purchase the iPhone tend to spend more time on their phones browsing the web than other phone users that would purchase other handsets. It should be stressed more that this data is gathered from web hits and how this can be biased.

On another note, both of my android phones don’t even identify themselves as an android device unless I change an option enabling them to be (warping the statistics even more), this is done so that users get the full web experience rather than the mobile, “lite”, version that often cripples web page features.

Also I would like to point out that I sell fire extinguishes and if market share was based on usage, well we would have gone broke a long time ago…
