“With Apple expected to take the wraps off its second-generation iPad in the next few months, talk has focused largely around the potential hardware enhancements to the tablet device, including rumors of an SD Card slot that AppleInsider sources now suggest is unlikely to materialize,” Kasper Jade reports for AppleInsider.
“That particular rumor appears to have gained its legs back in December when a pair of China-based case manufacturers leaked images of their upcoming iPad 2 protectors, which were presumably based off design schematics that often originate from Apple ahead of new product introductions and get passed around gray markets in the Far East,” Jade reports.
Jade reports, “In a mockup analysis of all the openings and recesses in those cases, it was speculated that that left-side opening could represent the much-rumored SD Card slot. However, a person that AppleInsider trusts on matters such as these has since rebutted that notion, stating instead that the break in the next-gen iPad enclosure at that location is actually a relocation of the tablet’s SIM card slot.”

The sd slot would provide expandability that some users demand. I Kobe of one diehard pc proponent that will buy an iPhone but hates the idea of no expanbilolty. So apple could sell more if they have those options.
On the other hand not offering expandability could drive current owners to upgrade more often.
There is a device that uses the dick connector to provide access to sd cards. Does anyone have experience sworn that?
Now that the likelihood of a retina (or similar HD display) has been dismissed (by some) and now no SD card, will the iPad 2 merely be distinguished by having a camera(s) and faster processor? Incremental improvements, yes, but I want Apple to move the bar higher!

As far as the dock connector for the SD slot, I have always heard that it doesn’t work with anything other than the iPad.
How about something along the lines of a miniaturised LightPeak connector? Maybe a new Dock connector (the current Dock connector style is, after all, going to need resizing eventually as batteries, etc., take more space in inverse proportion to smaller device sizes).

If the iPad or iPhone gets an SD slot, it won’t be capable of being used for expansion.

I believe the dick connector for SD cards works perfectly fine for importing pictures only. I don’t think they have it working with any other kind of media or file format (Pages, Keynote, etc). In fact, it is called ‘Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit’. The name makes it clear (and the product description confirms it) that all it does is to allow transfer of photos. Nothing more.
This makes sense in a way, since there is still no file system access from the OS, and no API in the SDK to store/retrieve app-related files into any storage other than internal, ready for synching with iTunes.

Take a look at the huge array of things that can connect to an iPad via the Dock Connector. SD, USB, VGA, HDMI, etc.
Would you want EVERY one of those ports built into the iPad?
How many would you use?
How many would you not use?
How would they effect the size, weight and cost of an iPad?
That’s the brilliance of the Dock Connector. It’s the do-all for all iOS devices. It’s really simpler and better to buy a cheap accessory IF and WHEN you need it rather than stuffing every imaginable connector in.
The Camera Connection Kit works flawlessly. There are 2 parts: an SD Card reader and one with a USB port that a camera can connect to directly.
I was in Costa Rica in the beginning of January. To save weight, I took just my iPad and a couple of cameras One with SD, the other CompactFlash). At the end of every day I transferred photos to the iPad with the CCK. It’s simple, fast and foolproof: it doesn’t overwrite previously downloaded photos.
So, so far pretty much every rumor other than size has been discounted. So are they updating anything on this device other that adding the cameras that should have been in it from the start?
i’d say its pretty piss poor of them if all they do is add the cam’s and up the ram. so ill wait for the real announcement, these rumor mills are all a big let down.
The argument about the case having an opening for a SIM card is way too weak to even be considered serious, therefore the whole thing can be completely ignored.
Does anyone know any person in any country in the world who frequently removes and replaces their SIM card from any mobile device they own? I don’t. It is removed just about as often as the battery (i.e. pretty much never).

Why on earth would a company make a case with an opening for a SIM card that they would NEVER take out? Sounds like that slot would be for something else rather than something that would be removed once.

The MDN app is very buggy.
The log-in bug is one that I encounter frequently.
I used to delete and reinstall the app to fix it, but I recently discovered that all you have to do is click the log-out button, and then log back in.
I have learned after many frustrating experiences to copy any long posts to the clipboard before hitting submit, because this bug can appear at any given time, unexpectedly.

It is my sister in law that thinks you have to have all manner of connectors for devices. She’s a hard core crackberry and windows fan. Her dislike of everything Apple is hilarious.
Still she saw me control the Apple TV effortlessly with my iPhone and maybe that tweaked her attention. I didn’t say anything about it because she would just come out with the usual crap. But a couple of days later we got some questions about getting content from a SD card onto an iPhone.

One little tip i found on the iPhone app, use the magnifying glass to scroll up in the box. Pain in the ass, but it works.
