Apple today announced that more than 10 billion apps have been downloaded from its revolutionary App Store by the more than 160 million iPhone, iPod touch and iPad users worldwide.
The 10 billionth app downloaded, Paper Glider, was purchased by Gail Davis of Orpington, Kent, UK. As the winner of the App Store Countdown to 10 Billion Apps, Gail Davis will receive a $10,000 iTunes Gift Card.
“With more than 10 billion apps downloaded in just two and a half years—a staggering seven billion apps in the last year alone—the App Store has surpassed our wildest dreams,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, in the press release. “The App Store has revolutionized how software is created, distributed, discovered and sold. While others try to copy the App Store, it continues to offer developers and customers the most innovative experience on the planet.”
The revolutionary App Store offers more than 350,000 apps to iPhone, iPod touch and iPad users in 90 countries around the world, with more than 60,000 native iPad apps available. App Store customers can choose from an incredible range of apps in 20 categories, including games, business, news, sports, health, reference and travel.

MacDailyNews Take: Congrats, Gail!
And if the winner is gainfully employed, most likely (s)he owes $2,500 in federal taxes + probably another $500 more in state taxes. I wonder if they will let the poor sap, er lucky winner, withdraw that amount in cash from the account?
With Verizon comming on line, I wonder how long til 20 billion are sold. Anyone want to guess?
The number of iOS devices doubled last year (approx 83 million devices sold), so the 20 billionth download should happen before the end of the year I guess
@ Death
Check again, Gail is from the UK.
@ Death
You noticed, didn’t you, that the $10,000 winner was: …Gail Davis of Orpington, Kent, UK.
That would amount to a gift card worth 6,249.61 GBP (United Kingdom Pounds).
What would be her tax liability in Great Britain, I wonder? Would it be higher or lower than the effective rate of 30% you predicted for the US?
@ Death,
She’s in the UK. She’ll probably owe the equivalent of $15,000 in taxes. They don’t like people getting ahead over there.
What state is the UK in? Hope it’s in California … they could use the money!
Well, then. So much for competing again the world. As if I ever stood a chance to win this contest. You better believe! ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”snake” style=”border:0;” />
@ Crunch n’ Munch Baked Cheddar Snack Cakes™,
Are you as proud as I am about the obesity epidemic?
Based on what I see in these comments, the educational level of our citizens are sorely lacking. UK is United Kingdom (Great Britain) or England to most folks. It’s located in the western part of Europe.
Prize winners in the Canada and I believe the UK are not taxed on winnings, only the interest from winnings. Gail should be ok ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />
Damn’t! I bought sooo many apps!
@Big Mac,
Hey at least we’re number one in something!!!
@JB – sort of an island isn’t it? I seem to recall “this sceptred isle, ” or something along those lines.
It matters little how much she will pay in taxes. Her health care and pension aren’t under attack.
I came so close to winning this one!! I had downloaded the 999,999,999th app!! DAMN!
what? you dependent on the government,or something? as in total loser?
Wow! Congratulations on winning the big prize.
How many of the 10 Billion downloads were paid?
Wow… For downloading the freeappaday paper glider, she got the $10,000 card.
Paper glider was free yesterday.
Grats anyway.
I must have been off by one app…
@ Death – absolutely no tax on uk winnings so she gets the full amount
I hoped it would be someone with the same name as Steve Ballmer, Eric Schmidt or so. Haha!
I’d rather have the money.
Giving away $10,000 that’s going to come back to Apple the record companies and the artists is not much of a gift at all.
JB calling Death stupid. Slow day at MDN.

Uh I hope your in like the 6th grade…
Congratulations Gail. Nice little bonus, but it’s a shame she can’t spend some of it at the local Apple Store in Bluwater instead. £6500 is a LOT of content.
@JB

Not to split hairs, but <strongGreat Britain</strong> includes Scotland, Wales, and England.
The <strongUnited Kingdom</strong is comprised of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
England is the the most populous country within Great Britain and the United Kingdom.
