People are having very heated arguments about their tablets, but I would like to offer another perspective that is based on the degree a device have met expectations of its customers. MDN sums it up nicely.

A friend of mine recently asked me if he should purchase a Galaxy tablet. I showed him my iPad and explained (in detail) why he would be better to either a) purchase an iPad, or b) wait for the iPad 2. He did neither, and purchased the Galaxy tab. Now, he regrets his decision and will probably end up purchasing an iPad anyway.

So it is, and so it will be, with any competing product; Apple has set the bar, and it is unattainably high...

any company that is so poorly managed that it requires Co-CEO’s is a company to keep your money out of. The fact that you have blow hards as the RIMM Co-CEO’s means the company lacks vision and focus. As a rule I never put money into a Company that has more then one CEO. I also don’t put money into a Company where the CEO can be over ruled by the company founders, This shows the company has no respect for their customers or their employees. Companies like this typically start to fail after a few flopped products and the CEO is targeted as the cause of the failures.

While RIM’s CEO’s were resting on their laurels, Steve Jobs had a
fire lit under the butt’s of R&D. RIMM’s mistake was made in 2006, not today. Now RIMM is motivated for fear of death, when they should have been motivated back then instead of sitting around enjoying their success. Jobs is more focused on leaving a legacy than enjoying his chocolate dipped strawberries and massages.

It’s not just the hardware or Apple’s battery tech (although that helps). It’s th 5+ years Apple spent developing iOS, combined with the work on th MacBook Air and other products. You just can’t copy that in a few months.

QNX is made to run on everything from a car to a nuclear power plant!?

Ok, looking at the power requirements I understand the Nuclear option. Now, everything else that has it own 220 line or little power generator from, ummmm, say 147 horsepower gas or diesel engine? Yea, dump that mobile stuff you can run on a little battery and that fits in your hand. I see......

Android tablets may be competitive until Apple finally wins some patent cases. I think HP with WebOS has a chance too. Seems like they are taking their time to get it right. MS still has enough users to give it a chance if they can pull off an OS even 1/2 as good as the iPad. I don’t think, however, that RIM has the chops to make a decent tablet. They can barely make a smartphone.

To reverse the quote from Palm's former CEO, this is what Apple might say...

"We’ve learned and struggled for a few years here figuring out how to make a decent computer. The phone guys are not going to just figure this out. They’re not going to just walk in.”

An iPad is a "computer," not a glorified pager. Apple scaled down a full-sized computer to create iPhone and iPad. RIM and the Android bunch are scaling up a PDA to create a big PDA.

The iPad’s battery life is amazing. My wife’s new one was booted up on Christmas Eve and had the crap ran out of it all weekend. Didn’t recharge it until late Sunday night when it was down to 8%. And, I didn’t realize until Monday night that over 30 apps were still open. These other companies are going to have to pull a rabbit out of the hat to beat Apple.

One, take Shaw Wu's analysis with a grain of salt, as he's been wrong before.

Two, the big question surrounding the PlayBook has always been battery life. We know it's got a dual-core chip, and it runs Adobe Air, so it must be using alot of juice, but the weight of the device seems normal for a 7" screen. So, short battery life was always a concern.

Three, this also explains why QNX is not coming to BB phones for a while. Not only does QNX require a dual-core chip, but they need a chip that isn't going to be crippled by weak battery life.

AND the only reason Samsung is in any kind of shape to come in a distant second (works for sandisk on fake ipods) is that Apple taught them how.

From what I understand, Apple helped develop the battery technology they are using. They didn’t just go to the Sanyo battery store and just pick out some AA’s. This stuff is not for the faint of heart.
