RIM shares fall on ‘PlayBook’ tablet reaction

“Research In Motion Ltd. shares fell as much as 4% Tuesday as analysts had mixed reactions to the company’s latest device — a tablet designed to compete against Apple Inc.’s popular iPad,” Dan Gallagher reports for MarketWatch.

“The tablet — known as the PlayBook — was introduced by RIM Monday at its annual developers conference in San Francisco,” Gallagher reports. “No price was given for the touch-screen device, which is expected to go on sale in the U.S. sometime in early 2011 and in other markets by the second quarter. ‘With the PlayBook only available for consumers after the holiday season, we view this as a mild disappointment,’ wrote T. Michael Walkley of Canaccord Adams in a note to clients Tuesday. Walkley noted that the lack of a product demonstration made it more difficult to gauge its potential.”

Gallagher reports, “Several brokers have grown negative on RIM lately, on the belief that sales of BlackBerry smart phones will face growing competition from rival products such as the iPhone ‘We maintain our negative rating as we believe RIM’s new product launches [PlayBook, Torch] do not address near-term share losses in the North American consumer smart-phone market,’ wrote Jeff Fidacaro of Susquehanna in a report Tuesday.”

  1. @R2

Funny how desperate the tech press/Apple haters are for an iPad killer isn’t it? Yeah, a product to kill the very product that essentially invented this product category.

How many years of a head start did everyone else have on tablets?

  2. This is a tactic that Microsoft used to use all the time back in the day. “Show off” a product without really showing anything just to let your current constituency know that you may come to market with your own version of a competitor’s product. This is an attempt to keep anymore from fleeing to another platform and wreaks of desperation. If they weren’t they would wait until the product was actually real and at a usable level.

And by the way, a product can’t be considered “vaporware” until after its initial release date is missed, meaning that the product never materialized.

Basically it is nothing more than a concept until they produce a running prototype.

  4. “…the belief that sales of BlackBerry smart phones will face growing competition from rival products such as the iPhone.”

    The belief? Will face?

Has this writer not noticed the blackberry is already being thoroughly crushed under the elegantly designed wheels of the Apple juggernaut?

And as far as the “playbook,” rim and the other me-tooers should know if they cannot bring something as compelling as Apple’s products to market, then their announcements amount to farting in front of the entire world. Just ask Ballmer.

  6. Everyone understands that the iPad will be near the end of its cycle.

This does not change the outstanding specifications on the Blackberry tablet.

It outclasses the current iPad, Android, and vapor chrome tablets with reported capabilities.

Will will not be getting dual core processors in the new iPad.
We will not be getting dual HD cameras in the iPad. Lucky if we get one as Apple likes to add small features one per year.
We will definitely not be getting symmetrical multiprocessing.
We will not be getting Flash. Yes, Flash sucks. However I would rather have it and watch it fade away as that provides a more seamless web experience than constantly seeing the missing plug-in symbol.
We will not be getting 1GB of RAM.

We WILL still be living in a sandboxed walled garden in which we can’t even treat our iPads like hard drives.

In comparison to the current iPad and probably iPad 2.0, this thing is a beast.

The BlackBerry tablet is a much more professional piece of hardware and enterprise clients will be attracted to it.

So don’t be haten’ just cause there’s no Apple logo on it. Give credit where credit is due and hope Apple can surpass the hurdle of her own arrogance and see that this thing was built from the ground up to provide every feature people complain about missing in the iPad.

It looks more like iPad 4.0 than iPad 2.0.

  10. @Michael could be write when he says, “…Basically it is nothing more than a concept until they produce a running prototype….”

but if it’s anywhere close to what’s been advertised… I’m impressed.

  12. The Blackberry Tablet does have an ecosystem as well.

    1. It will have at its disposal the Blackberry e-mail system, which is still faster than typical pop and iMap services.

    2. It will obviously participate in the BlackBerry social network.

    3. BlackBerry clearly doesn’t have iTunes but they’ve created their own app store and music store. I suspect they will find away to integrate television, movies, and books.

    4. Developers will not hesitate to write for the device.

Again, it all depends on how close to the truth the announcement is.

  14. You know, it doesn’t work without a blackberry to supply info. That’s their security plan, if you loose it there’s no need to wipe remotely, because there is NO DATA ON THE DEVISE. But what if you loose your Blackberry?

It’s just a peripheral for the phone. “New from RIM, the Trackpad touchscreen”

I bet we won’t be getting a Blu-Ray DVD drive, either. Dang it, Apple!

“This does not change the outstanding specifications on the Blackberry tablet.”
#1. What tablet? Nothing physical has been displayed.
#2. “outstanding specifications” = “feature list”. Yeah, who cares if the thing actually works as advertised, as long as we fill the side of the box with text!

“We will not be getting dual HD cameras in the iPad.”
    Battery drain.
And I can just see all these RIM Tablet users running around taking pictures with a tablet.
Imagine the kindergarten play, when Jenny’s Dad get’s in to a fight with Johnny’s dad, because Jenny’s Dad’s tablet camera got in the way of Johnny’s dad’s tablet camera, right at the big solo during “Mary Had a Little Lamb”.

    “Flash”
Yep, blame Apple for Adobe’s big mistake.

You have amazing powers, to know that the next gen iPad will or will not have a GB of ram.

“We WILL still be living in a sandboxed walled garden …”
Spoken like a true hater, hating that Apple stuff works.

“In comparison to the current iPad and probably iPad 2.0, this thing is a beast.”
    WHAT, is a beast? Where?
I have seen nothing but CGI and a feature list (more accurately, a wish list).

“The BlackBerry tablet is a much more professional piece of hardware …”
    Hardware?! … HARDWARE?!

“..hope Apple can surpass the hurdle of her own arrogance …”
    Yep, Apple Hater language.

theloniousMac, your Troll skills are declining in direct proportion to the rise in your panic and desperation.
I can smell your bitter sweat from here, and actually, I quite like it.
