I seriously started to get into learning Dineh Bizat (Dineh=Navajo). But also wonder about Hopis. Manyof the original folks is interesting. There were some violent tribes, but most of natives could have teach a lot more to white people than what white people could ever “teach” them.
Too bad that they didn’t understood the spite and greed of the arriving gents soon enough…

European settlers at the time thought that the difference between civilized humans and savages was a written language.

Giving his people a written language did not give his people the respect they wanted. Academia just moved the 'civilized' bar higher.

I read about Sequoyah’s development of the written form in the book Guns, Germs, and Steel. Very interesting story- he based the characters on the roman forms that Europeans used, but he didn’t know what any of them meant, so they look similar but sound completly different.

The Cherokee were part of the U.S. Marines Code Talkers Division.
About time we try to preserve these iconic languages.
Good on the Cherokee Nation for recognizing that only they can make this happen. They didn't wait and took on the task.
