Daring Fireball’s John Gruber is inviting everyone to listen to his live podcast this Wednesday at 1pm EDT.

Gruber says, “We’ll have much to talk about, what with the new Mac Pros (finally, right?), speed-bump iMacs, and the gorgeous new 16:9 27-inch Cinema Display that Apple might hypothetically release tomorrow… Doubly-hypothetical, but who knows, maybe even that desktop multitouch trackpad device I first mentioned last October, too.”

I always thought of the Wacom tablets as stand-alone devices. Do you use it with a desktop Mac for programs like Photoshop or Quark?

the reason graphics (i suppose that includes us video guys) don’t like glossy displays is because you can’t fscking see anything with all the allahdamned glare.

You see skylights and overhead lights and stark contrasts between wall colors and the colors of things on the wall…. and i don’t want to see that shit. I want to see my fscking video.

WACOM tablets are mainly USB, (there are a couple of Bluetooth units, too) and are essentially mouse replacements, with FAR superior ergonomics.

So, they can be used with desktop or portable Macs. I use mine for everything… in the Finder, Vectorworks, Safari, Photoshop, Illustrator, Freeway Pro, you name it. They’re not great for gaming.

What on earth are you talking about? I love gloss induced eyestrain accompanied by skull-splitting headaches. 3D modeling with a glossy display makes them extra intense! A real treat!

@ the graphic/video guys: I understand a preference, but if you’re getting glare from a room’s config, change it. You wouldn’t want to go to a recording studio that wasn’t treated for audio. Why wouldn’t you have something like that to do for a video suite or graphics stations?

it could just be me but… I normally design in a dark room. So if I had a glossy screen.. which I do on this imac at work I wouldn’t have a problem.. Though I have a couple light over me and I get no glare….

Most designers I know work in the dark and the prepress people her prefer it darker than light. And I do design, video, animation, etc. So from all aspects I only get eye strain when the room is light and I have to stare at a screen.

This designer says: No matte – NO SALE.

Actually I got fed up last year with waiting for Apple to come to its senses and provide a pro-monitor – so I went out and bought a beautiful matte screen from a real pro manufacturer. If Apple doesn’t want my money – it’s their loss.

I do NOT want a 27″ display. I want a higher resolution 30″ display!

I do NOT want a 16:9 display. I don’t want a TV! I want a computer monitor that allows me to have menus and such above & below the 16:9 video image!

One thing that annoys the heck out of me with the iMacs is that THERE IS NO STATUS LIGHT. How the heck can one tell the difference from a sleeping iMac and an iMac that is shut down.

I am a musician. While I can sometimes work (when really necessary) in a noisy room, I can only properly function in a room with no external noise. I have friends who are movie directors. When I collaborate with them on a movie (i.e. writing/recording a score for it), they always ask me to turn off the lights in my studio when listening to my score while watching their film. Same for graphic designers; many I know, who work in offices, either have lights off, or very much turned down, or have serious hoods around the monitors. I can’t think of a single graphic designer I know who would work in a brightly lit room. Based on my knowledge on the subject (and familiarity with professionals in the field), I can’t for the life of me imagine how would anyone get ANY glare on their monitor, if they indeed are graphic professionals, and work in an environment of THEIR choice (or at least, professional environment).

So it sounds like all of you who say we just need to “control our environments” and bend over and accept glossy monitors should then suffer when we have employers who are not willing to alter their office lighting so that there is not always a window or overhead light’s hot spot somewhere on the glossy screen.

Sorry, I may have been a Mac user for longer than most people, but if Apple’s got all glossy monitors, my answer is simply to not buy an Apple monitor.

There was a discussion a couple weeks ago where everybody said “Apple is god, you don’t need Blu-ray resolution to watch a movie on a laptop” and one guy said “If I already own a movie on Blu-ray for my home theater and want to watch it at another location on my laptop, then because I own a Mac I have to buy the movie again on DVD or download, right?” and the answer was “Don’t watch the movie, do something else.” Great.

Come on you people, stop being apologists for restrictive Apple decisions. Be Mac users with a backbone.

Hundreds of press and bloggers excitedly waiting so that they can bash Apple regardless of the quality of the product.

There’s a blogger on ZDnet who has publicly stated his M.O. is to straight away check out the forums on Apple’s website to see the complains about any new product (and then I guess blow it up with wild condemnations, re: Antennagate). Because Apple sells so many units so quickly it’s so easy to write stuff like “dozens of users have complained about XYZ, although of course it’s actually 0.55% of users or whatever. sigh.
