RUMOR: Apple’s iLife ‘11 to bow in August with new mystery application

Nick Spence reports for Macworld UK, “A new iLife 10, or even iLife 11, will be released on 7 August 2010, according to French Mac enthusiast site Mac4Ever.com. The update will include 64-bit compatibility and a ‘nouvelle application (mystère !).’”

Spence reports, “To support claims that a new iLife may be with us sooner than later, last week TUAW reported ‘iLife ’10 for Dummies’ was spotted on the French Amazon site, although the book, due for publication on 23 September, has since been removed.”

And, please don’t tell me that people can view iMovie movies on their computers and gadgets such as iPad and iPhone.

Much of my audience don’t have those gadgets and they DO NOT want to view them on their computers (if they have one). They want to watch them on TV. On TV.

That means they need DVD. Lord Jobs is dead wrong. People WANT and NEED DVDs today and well into the future. Maybe forever.

The lack of Apple support for DVD leaves a giant hole in their product line up and a cavern as big as the universe in their promise to care about their customers.

When he says he loves his ‘users’ lord Jobs is lying. Simple as that my friends, simple as that.

I am hoping the mystery app is for creating your own ebook. Apple sells apps for the creation of movies, photos, and music. It is time for them to turn their attention to the book publishing world.
At a time when there were reports of Steve Jobs responding to emails, I sent him one asking if Apple was going to produce an epub creation app. There was no response whatsoever. Of course that is not proof of anything in particular but I did think it odd there wasn’t even an acknowledgment of my message.

I want to see some sort of blogging and a more private type of social networking that can be used with MobileMe idevices for personal domains.
I will never use facebook or anything like it so this would be a nice solution for me.
Example you can integrate googles blogger and MobileMe gallery into your personal domain using iWeb. I would like apple to provide the software for that and integrate it into ios.

I call BS. I don’t think this is a news tip as much as a prediction, or just wishful thinking.

And everything in the supposed story is just a straight-line projection of what Apple has already done. For example:

- iLife has cost $79 for years now.

- Once 2010 is well underway, it makes sense to name the next iteration iLife ’11 to lengthen its shelf life.

- It makes sense that iLife ’11 would come out soon, b/c it’s been 18 months since the last refresh, which is on the long side for that product. (And, I think I recall that iLife ’08 was introduced in the late summer of ’06.)

- And it is a common prediction that Apple will retire iDVD because Apple thinks that people will prefer to share their videos over the cloud. Steve has said as much.

- “improved faces and places” is just a obvious tweak that would be expected in the next version of iPhoto, as is the case with the vaguely worded “improved integration” with social web, and the 64 bit.

The two big items lack any of the detail they would need to appear credible.

- “totally redone” iWeb. This would be a welcome change, but what does it mean?
- “Mystery app.” This too is so vague as to mean nothing.

This just seems to me to be a very thin rumor, part guesswork and part wishful thinking.

It’s quite possible that Apple would release a new iLife this summer–I would buy it immediately. And I’d love to see them surprise us with some new app. But this story doesn’t give me any reason to believe any of that.

If these rumors are true, a new iApp and dropping iDVD, it’s possible that iDVD (or certain features of it) could be rolled into iMovie.

And it’s possible the new iApp could have something to do with the iPad… say a consumer-level content creation app.

However, now that I think about it, such an iApp would probably be getting a bit ahead of things with only 3 million iPads out there at this time… although I do expect some such iApp to eventually make an appearance.

Hopefully the mystery app will be the retirement of the incredibly bad and unusable iMovie 8, while bringing back a new and improved iMovie HD. Please, oh God, please… I am begging you, Steve Jobs!

The retirement of iDVD is ludicrous. The public is still buying and renting DVDs by the truckload. DVD as a media format is hardly dead.

How about the ime for my mac. For too long have I been wanting a sinlge point to access all my daily data. By now you shouldn’t have to open address book, mail, calendar all as separate apps.

They need an outlook killer. Like Entourage but actually works. You could even just call it iLife.

Why take out iDVD? Oh well, time to preserve it like my Copy of iLife o6 with iMovie HD which is still the best version of iMovie Apple has ever made.

I still use iMovie HD all the time. I can’t get used to the restrictions and missing features of iMovie 09. I still make custom DVD’s with iDVD all the Time.

What apple should concentrate on is make the apps more stable + the full 64bit. But bring back the functionalities of iMovie HD into the next iMovie and stop dumbing it down like they have for the past 4 years.

Oh yeah, they should scrap iWork and included the iWork Apps into iLife.!!

The guy on gizmodo that posted this story (sorry don’t know the name, might even be a girl.. just sayin’) had a cool suggestion that the mystery app is one to create iOS apps (much like that thing Google released for android). Like Automator.. but for iOS apps – just drag and drop code, templates, etc etc to create basic applications.
Could definitely be interesting.
All I really want to change is HTML5 in iWeb.. I’m too lazy (dumb) to figure out most HTML5/CSS coding and would love to create stuff like they have on their demo page without having to learn anything haha

DVD authoring should have included to iMovie long ago. Since iM08 movies need to be encoded twice. It takes extra time and also affects quality.

I think the true arrogance is coming from you by expecting Apple an Steve Jobs to develop apps for you and your friends. Plain and simply… they are making and selling a product. If you don’t want to buy it, then don’t. I’m sure Dell or HP will be happy o take your money and provide a sub-par system and software to meet your needs.

I don’t think Apple would dump dvd drives without replacing them with something else. However it wouldn’t worry me in the least if they did. I stopped using internal drives in iMacs years when I discovered they were slow and the quality was questionable.

I use external drives which are faster and more robust. In the imacs at least they use Matsushita which are real bargain basement drives. Frankly part of the spelling of Matsushita pretty well sums them up. There are too many incorrect burns and my latest iMac drive puts scratches on the dvd when it’s burned. They still work but it’s pretty scary.

Having said that what is classified as a bargain basement in an iMac is far superior to the same classification in the windows world.

First of all, on the strategy: iDVD needs to become iBluRay and fix all the DVD bugs as well. There is a reason Blockbuster/Netflix are around. Now Steve wants to sabotage BluRay/DVD by putting noisy, crappy drives in his otherwise very elegant computers then he stops development on iDVD so that it’s buggy as hell. Trying to create a wedding DVD with iDVD has been a nightmare of “Menu Encoding Failures” and explained muted menu sounds. I feel really bad for switching my dad to Mac. He had such an easy time with Pinnacle but his computer had gotten really old…and well the iPhone is awesome and the iMac is pretty so I convinced him to take the plunge…

You fooled me Steve, but I should have remembered you get what you pay for. If you give me $79 for 5 apps or $100 for one app in Pinnacle for Windows, I should know the focused app is going to be 5 times better. I should’ve stuck with windows. Crap, so much wasted time and money!

An iApp making app would go against Apples small print for developers who sign up for $99 developers license.

An easy app creator would create millions more apps. Apple don’t want a hundred variations on iFart.

Better still, there is a free program to easily create iOS apps by drag and drop:

A graphic package or HTML 5 animation creator could be likely, to really hit Adobe where it hurts.

The mystery package ? what if Apple decides to combine iWork and iLife Packages . The mystery package could be an iBook authoring system so that you can create iBooks with all the fancy page turning, audio and video. On the other hand Apple may add such function to Pages.

Reading the comments from Rob regarding iDVD . I have an i5 iMac (sep 2009) . I have created lots of DVDs without any problems. I generally create the videos (either full HD or 720p) and export them in HD format to hard disc as MPeg-4(quicktime files) then pop them into iDVD. Burn to DVD and iDVD encodes without problems . Problems arise if you try to exceed the capacity of the DVD disk in which case error messages will appear. Click on project info to change settings.
