Analysts stand by Apple despite media feeding frenzy

Research Recap reports for Seeking Alpha, “Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced Friday that the firm would offer iPhone 4 users free bumpers or cases that would solve the signal loss problem. ‘This is life in the smartphone world,’ he said. ‘Phones aren’t perfect. It’s a challenge for the whole industry. Every phone has weak spots,'”

• “Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster said in a note to investors: ‘We believe the company adequately proved the antenna issue is an industrywide problem, and the case solution is of minimal cost to Apple.’

• Brian Marshall, an analyst at Gleacher & Co. said ”The stock is incredibly undervalued.”

• UBS analyst Maynard Um kept his “buy” rating and $320 price target on Apple’s stock.

• Kaufman Bros analyst Shaw Wu also maintains his ”buy” rating for Apple and 12 month price target of $349, calling the problem a mere ”minor blip”.

• Clyde Montevirgen at Standard & Poors reiterates a “buy” rating and a $325 price target for Apple.

“‘We believe Apple accomplished its objective of addressing the iPhone 4 antenna issues to its customers and, more importantly, relieving the excitement levels and tension with the press,’ BMO Capital Markets analyst Keith Bachman wrote in a research report,” Research Recap reports.

  1. I fixed the problem I was having with the failure of the phone to make and maintain phone calls… I returned iP4 to my Apple Retail Store today. Clerk told me I was the fifth today (about noon) and said others also said the reason was they didn’t want to get stuck with a lemon when new models would be available in October – right after the antenna redesign was completed.

Maybe Jobs will replace the ones he is selling now with the new model but I don’t trust him any more. I’ll just wait until the new one is in the hands of customers and if it is, in fact, performing as Steve promised at WWDC, I’ll repurchase.

  2. Smart analysts stick to the facts and solid research, and ignore the hype and hysteria. Their focus is the bottom line. If this issue does not impact earnings in a material fashion, the whole issue is noise, not news.

Keep in mind that journalists and especially bloggers are often spoon fed BS from PR firms and company marketing representatives. These days, bloggers are low-hanging fruit for FUD and disinformation efforts. They’re easily fooled, have no journalistic standards and never met a dollar they didn’t like. Sadly, media outlets in search of extra clicks craft sensationalistic stories and linked headlines based on badly researched (if they are researched at all) blogs. Worst of all, blogs like Gizmodo have been quoted frequently, giving them a sort-of credibility.

When you think of it, Gizmodo, TechCrunch or Boy Genius Report, to give a couple of examples, will gladly run planted rumors, tips and planted stories from the PR firms that represent large corporations. It does not take much to start a rumor or to plant a false story, and if crafted carefully, can take on a life of its own. In trade for getting exclusive access, or a look at a pre-release prototype, a hardware or software company can often get top page coverage. Their screeds are quickly syndicated to sites such as Google News, and soon afterward, the wire services pick up the story. If it’s sexy enough, screed scribes or “analysts” for hire like Seth Weintraub, Jason Chen or Rob Enderle will use this for their latest garbage.

But smart financial analysts have too much at stake. They have to look past the BS and do their own research. If their assessments are off, their brokerage house will catch serious hell from big institutional investors. So they have to dig for the facts.

    The good ones, that is.

  3. Running 4.0.1 with 1 bar at my house. Not 1 dropped call! This i4 phone is the best phone apple has ever made. This phone is NOT a lemon. It is one of the best phones Apple has ever made. Try it, If you don’t like it, take it back!

  4. 11 phones bought…. Zero, none, n/a, 0 problems, loss of signal, dropped calls. Best iPhone yet! Wish the pussies would return the phone and go get a free droid… They deserve one.

  5. “If Ballmer breaks wind at a press conference, and there’s nobody there to hear it, does it make a sound?”

If there are any nearby rodents, trees, or bacteria, the sound will be of them falling over dead….

  6. I have been reading a few very good PC tech websites for years but I am not going to mention their names and they are clearly living at Apple expenses. They have “nothing to attract their readers” and apparently are desperate enough for readers approval they will throw any bone they can. Is the PC tech world losing readers, attention, interest, motivation, etc they are trapped?. They can’t side with Apple because they are facing tough criticism from their readers but at the same time they need to stay inside some controversy to motivate their readers, even if it is just cultivating the wrong feeling. Let me tell you I am not a fan of brands and people but I love progress and technology and I regret how good products and companies are bashed. Even with Microsoft I am changing the way I look at it. I want them all… and even new enterprices competing and healthy.

  7. They HAVE NOT addressed the issue. They have just PATCH IT. if the problem would have been addressed seriously and responsibly they would have fix it and ask all the customers that paid for the phone to go to store and replace it for a NON FAULTY ONE. they can call it as they wish and keep misleading the people and the press but the truth is once you remove the bumper or case the problem is still there. It’s a joke and they are laughing at all of us. Shame on them.

  8. For those who understand the iPhone the antenna issue … there is NO issue for it has been resolved … for the doubters and ‘Apple Inc.’ haters etc. etc. …. go purchase whatever phone you like … Good Riddance!

  9. Several sites are reporting that the new Droid X is having some fairly serious screen issues. Let’s see if it gets the same press as Apple.
Consumer Reports, where are you? Make Motorola give everyone screen protectors so they can see the little red eye clearly!

  10. @FromNYC – you are missing the point. Take a deep breath, there is no issue.

In NYC, the issue is terrible AT&T service and over crowded 3G and GSM. The iPhone, 3G, and 3GS all had the same problems with signal loss and dropped calls, and they all had the problems exacerbated here in NYC.

Expand your view a bit… take a step back and see the entire forrest. There are lots of things that go into a problem and come out of a solution.
