What Apple CEO Steve Jobs has up his sleeve for WWDC 2010

invisibleSHIELD case for iPad“The developers conference that begins June 7 is likely to be ‘a non-event’ for Apple’s share price, according to Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster, with few surprises,” Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune. “But in the note to clients he issued Wednesday he adds that the new iPhone he expects Steve Jobs to introduce will likely drive unit sales beyond Wall Street’s targets — ‘providing a positive catalyst for shares of AAPL in the coming months.'”

His WWDC checklist:
• New iPhone: Likely
• New iPhone At Verizon: Unlikely
• iPad Sales Update: Possible
• New Mac OS X (10.7) Demo: Possible

Good points. Too many people seem to be overlooking Apple’s current position of strength. Even if Apple did not have any new developments in the near term pipeline, they would still be way ahead of the competition. The fact that Apple has a long term plan and continues to make progress in each of their core areas on a regular basis only strengthens their dominant position.

Is it an unassailable position. In the short term, I would say, yes. Apple is about as dominant in the mobile device space as it is possible to become. In the longer term, no position is immune to worthy competition. So far, we are just waiting for some worthy competition to show up…

  2. 1:47PM EST. Market cap situation:

    AAPL: $228.14B
    MSFT: $228.21B

About $70M is all that separates MSFT and AAPL market share today.

Any bets at what precise time AAPL will become larger than MSFT (even if for a brief moment, or a day or two)?

  3. > New iPhone: Likely

    “Likely”? How about definite.

    > New iPhone At Verizon: Unlikely

I agree. But I think there may be one for Sprint. That will give Apple a second wireless carrier option, but still allow Apple to keep a lucrative deal in place with ATT.

    > iPad Sales Update: Possible

“Possible”? Of course Apple will give a sales update on iPad (unless they provide one separately during the next two weeks).

    > New Mac OS X (10.7) Demo: Possible

“Possible”? Not likely. Apple and Steve Jobs have made it abundantly clear that this WWDC is focused on iPhone OS 4.0.

I agree. It is advantageous to Apple on many fronts:
    – It expands the potential user base.
    – Apple doesn’t help Verizon to go up against AT&T;, so expect some sweet deals between AT&T;and Apple as a reward.
    – It helps Sprint to gain subscribers, so expect a sweet deal between Apple and Sprint.
    – It is a pincher attack against Verizon. A strong competitor in AT&T;and a weaker competitor attacking from below. iPhone-less Verizon will have to agree to Apple’s terms if it is desperate enough to sell iPhone/iPad.

  5. With the rumour that Steve “Monkey Boy” Balmer might be there doing monkey tricks and chair throwing demos, it gets interesting.

I can’t wait for SJ’s intro “And here’s the CEO of the _second_ biggest tech company in the US…”

And I can’t wait to see monkey boy sucking up to SJ while SJ takes the piss out of monkey boy.

It’s going to be a memorable WWDC.

  6. Shadowself you are nuts!! But I love it. So don’t foget the 4K video camera Apple will offer. And what about the 3D 4k Apple cam, with the 3D editing software, that records 3D 4k to blu-ray.
The 3D cam, 3D editing software, 3D blu-ray recorder, and the 3D monitor, all for under $2000. Wow!! Well… you say you want a revolution?
