Nokia announced that it has today filed a complaint against Apple with the Federal District Court in the Western District of Wisconsin, alleging that Apple iPhone and iPad 3G products infringe five important Nokia patents.
The patents in question relate to technologies for enhanced speech and data transmission, using positioning data in applications and innovations in antenna configurations that improve performance and save space, allowing smaller and more compact devices. These patented innovations are important to Nokia’s success as they allow improved product performance and design.
“Nokia has been the leading developer of many key technologies in mobile devices” said Paul Melin, General Manager, Patent Licensing at Nokia, in the press release. “We have taken this step to protect the results of our pioneering development and to put an end to continued unlawful use of Nokia’s innovation.”
During the last two decades, Nokia has invested approximately EUR 40 billion in research and development and built one of the wireless industry’s strongest and broadest IPR portfolios, with over 11,000 patent families. Nokia is a world leader in the development of handheld device and mobile communications technologies, which is also demonstrated by Nokia’s strong patent portfolio.

If you can’t beat ’em, sue ’em
The Western District of where? New York or San Francisco must be to obscure a distric court to file in!
Notice the inclusion of the iPad in the suit, Tyk. Clearly, they held the complaint until they could bring the new boy into the issue.
Now, and with that said, how utterly pathetic this latest attempt to hobble innovation is. Good luck, Nokia. Your days are numbered.
Sounds to me like the SOS:
If you can’t compete, LITIGATE.
Federal District Court in the Western District of Wisconsin
Is that the new West Texas?
nokia means glutten for punishment in finnish. They can’t make a decent phone with all their patents yet they think aapl can. That’s a pretty poor assesment of your co. They will be bankrupt before ths goes to court and aapl will never let them use their software patents.
how pathetic. do they think they’re going to get a bunch of sympathetic scandanavians in Wisconsin?
look up “Finnish American” on Wikipedia and you will find that Wisconsin is one of the states with largest concentration of Finns.
Nokia is based in Finland.
I smell something fishy…I mean Finnishy.
11,000 patent families?!?….you would have thought they would have already come out with an innovative device long ago. It’s like playing bingo for several hours…till they heard an “O 69” BINGO! all of a sudden they are awake…after being complacent for years. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”rolleyes” style=”border:0;” />
Jah hey dere MAC sheep. You didn’t think MAC could copy the world’s tech companies forever and not get caught, did you? Maybe if desperate MAC invested in R & D and actually came up with their own innovations they wouldn’t have to scheme, steal and cheat their way out of the mess they’re in. They should license the I-Phone OS.
Gotta go. There’s a sale on bratwurst, cheese and brandy in Fond du Lac. Today only.
Your potential. Our passion.™
@Anonymous
That would be the Eastern District of Texas.
Juries from the Western District are dominated by no-nonsense ranchers and stable small town folk, not nearly so plaintiff-friendly.
Maybe the Nokia lawyers are just looking to do a little Muskie fishing.
If this allegation has any merit whatsoever, Apple should just buy Nokia with their cash in the bank. They can buy all outstanding shares and just close down the doors and put Apple stickers all over the place ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />. Stop the nonsense. We lawyers are making all the money and I hate lawyers.
lehmanlaw, a little research would reveal that NOK’s market cap is some $40 Billion. That would clean out Apple’s reserves and then some, given the typical buyout premium – all to swat away a pesky lawsuit?
Desperation lives
These are the 5 patents that Nokia leases to all other cell phone manufacturers at very attractive rates but will only lease to Apple at a much higher rate.
Talk about unfair competition. Nokia, meet the Lanham Act. You are about to get your ass kicked all the way back to Finland.
Let’s not be too hard on Wisconsin and cut the cheese state some slack…..
Is “positioning data in applications and innovations in antenna configurations” patents your strongest legal challenge? This is very sad. Is Nokia still trying to block the iPhone and iPad at home? Nokia’s done in the smart phone market (and maybe else where too.)!
“Finland? Isn’t that the capital of Norway?”
— Geena Davis in “Earth Girls are too Easy”
So THIS is what the $40 billion stockpile is for, to make sure no one bullies Apple into settling out of court.

Hey, your not all bad. At least you have good taste in food and beverages.
@ jonricmd:
> “Finland? Isn’t that the capital of Norway?”
Very ironic choice of venue. Western Wisconsin is populated by Swedes and Norwegians. You will find Finns in UP (Michigan) and North Dakota. There is a lot of good natured ribbing between these Scandinavian neighbors.
if you can’t beat them, sue them!
That would be “…[alleged] continued unlawful use of Nokia’s innovation.” There has been no judgment regarding whether or not there is unlawful use currently, much less in the past.
“During the last two decades, Nokia has invested approximately EUR 40 billion in research and development.” Yeah, so what. I’ll bet that M$ has spent a lot more than that. Unless it resulted in a valid patent that applies to the situation with Apple mobile devices, it is not relevant.
EUR 40 billion in research and those phones are all you have to show for it?!?!?!?
