PC World’s Gruman: iPad pre-orders are for idiots only

Apple Online Store“Friday morning, the fool’s parade started. Apple is taking online ‘pre-orders’ for its iPad tablet, which is supposed to begin shipping on April 3. Buying a new kind of product sight unseen is foolish,” Galen Gruman writes for PCWorld. “Especially given how mysterious Apple has been on what the iPad can do and what restrictions on capabilities and media access it will place on users and content providers.”

“Why blow $500 to $830 on a device that may not be what you expect? Just wait a mere three weeks to see for sure what it actually does and what surprises, good and bad, Apple has packed into the iPad,” Gruman writes.

MacDailyNews Take: Because demand may well outstrip supply and some of us have years of experience buying and being delighted by Apple products.

Gruman continues, “We’ve all seen promising product demonstrations that resulted in major letdown when we finally got a hold of the real thing. Why take that chance? …Maybe I’m wrong — maybe the iPad will be the full ‘magic’ that Steve Jobs promises. Wonderful! If that’s the case, buy one when you know it really is magic — after people not employed by Apple have had a chance to really use it and put it through its paces. Until then, why send Apple your money until you know for sure? Doing so would be, well, foolish.”

MacDailyNews Take: See previous Take and the related articles below that detail hands-on iPad use.

Gruman continues, “It looked like a few people were willing to go online first thing in the morning to order their iPads sight unseen… But only a few. Maybe the infamous Jobs reality distortion field does have limits after all.”

MacDailyNews Take: Yeah, stratospheric limits:
• 120,000 iPads pre-ordered on first day? – March 13, 2010
25,000 Apple iPad pre-orders per hour? – March 12, 2010

Gruman continues, “A fool and his money are soon parted, the saying goes.”

MacDailyNews Take: We remain quite happy to have helped lead the parade as some of the very first fools to pre-order our iPads yesterday morning. We understand Gruman’s fears (he doesn’t sound too experienced with Apple products, so he’s likely been harshly disappointed many, many, many times in the past by PC box assemblers, Microsoft, and the like) and we therefore forgive him for his criticisms, condemnations, and complaints. Hopefully, Galen will be able to get his iPad when he’s thoroughly assured himself that it’s the right move for him.

  1. Listen folks, a lot of people cannot afford an iPad. Not eveyone can drive a Lexus either. So for them they should wait and save their pennies. But for those of us with ready funds it is fun to jump into the pool. I am an old man but I have been an early adopter all my life. First on the block to have Stereo, Color TV, Microwave, Betamax, Videocam, HDTV, Tivo and just about every single Apple product or software. And I always dive in day one and I will continue to do the same until I die. Never regretted it, ever. I still keep my Cube running just for fun. I had to order a Wifi only along with a 3G just so I could get the day one thrill. I pity those who are afraid of the water. It is fine.

I agree 100% with your analysis, that’s exactly what I was thinking about except that you threw in more details i.e. iPhone sales slowing as people expect a new one in June.

    So hold on to your AAPL stocks still ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

I am everyone’s brother my friend. I am old enough to know that new things keep you young and whining just ticks everyone off. I come to these forums and read posts by some of the most miserable folks in the world. I marvel at how people come here to talk politics, or religion or hatred. No one changes from reading that stuff, and sadly no one will change from reading my stuff. But there is some good info to learn here and some posts are educational and many plain entertaining.

  4. LOL

“We’ve all seen promising product demonstrations that resulted in major letdown when we finally got a hold of the real thing.”

Is he talking about Windows?? Haha no wonder, he is comes form the world of Windows PC…

  5. Thank you, MDN. I saw that article this morning but didn’t want to donate them my click. I’m so glad you picked it up and now I don’t have to wonder what was that all about. I’m so glad I skipped.

  6. lol

We discovered fire about 5 years ago and now have heat in our igloos, so we’re good to go.

And there’s usually someone within a hundred mile radius who has electricity for us to recharge the battery.

Go Canada! Go fools! lol Not so much the wireless providers who in NO WAY will have the sweet data plan that AT&T;is offering.

    Ah, such is life.

    Go iPad!

  7. Always remember the 14 day return rule. I used it on a Droid, they have it too, and was I happy to return it. I had thought of a plan to Get a wifi only model about the 20th of April and then if it wasn’t what I want take it in for the 3G model. But instead I will get the wifi on Apr 3 and the good wife gets it on 3G day. Win Win me, the wife and our APPL.

  8. It’s a no-win situation; if people pay attention to the real “fool” and not buy the iPad, Gruman will point to low pre-sale numbers and say, “Wow, looks like Apple’s got another dud to go along with AppleTV.”

  9. This guy is a lifetime victim of non-Apple product beta testing.
His skepticism is inbred from using 3rd party conglomerations of
hardware and software all his life…who can blame him. I have a revision
A Bondi Blue(green) iMac still running, a PowerMac 7500 still running,
a revision A Macbook I am typing on now, and a revision A iPod touch
that I have dropped on the concrete at work 4 times now, and is running fine
    despite a few scratches.
I say otherwise to this poor guys article.

  10. Another example of someone who doesn’t get it.

#1 apple is not mysterious about this product, at least not since it’s announcement, it will do nearly everything except run flash. Mew info even came out yesturday about avi support. And if u have seen the keynote, or the montage video, or even the 30 second spot; it is not “site unseen”

#2 just based on what it is and what it will do on launch day is more than enough for me, it’s perfect for a student, professional, or home user, it’s good for anything you would want to do, it’s freaking awesome.
