RUMOR: Apple to release Mac Pro ‘hexacore’ Xeon Core i7-980x on Tuesday, March 16

“I’m getting tips in from sources who claim that Apple is set to revamp its high-end Mac Pro line, adding a ‘hexacore’ Core i7-980x model to the line up,” Adrian Kingsley-Hughes reports for ZDNet.

“All information points to this happening next Tuesday, March 16th,” Kingsley-Hughes reports.

“A ‘hexacore’ system would represent a significant upgrade for the Mac Pro line,” Kingsley-Hughes reports.

The MacBook Pro needs some serious love with the i5 and i7 cpus. MBPs are now seriously behind the cpu curve. I guess Apple is having to wait because of the legal battle between Intel and Nvidia.

The site someone mentioned earlier is the MacRumors Buyer’s Guide. It is very useful in that it states the last update for each Apple model and rates them in terms of upgrade probability (preventing users from buying a model that is an update candidate. Check it out it is really very informative

Really, ‘Hexa’ isn’t immediately recognizable as indicating ’6′, as in hexagon?

I have to say, I am happy as hell about this. Being a 3D Motion Graphics Artist, I need all the horsepower I can get. Even with my 8-Core MacPro I still have renders that can take hours, days, or weeks to complete.

Obviously a Dual Hexacore (or Dodecacore, if you will) Mac Pro won’t eliminate that completely, every little bump in speed helps.

Mac Pro is more in need of a refresh than the MBP.

Definitely would put the MP more into “Pro” territory, since the vast majority of consumer software doesn’t barely flex the muscles of current 4-core systems.

Unfortunately, the premium pricing that Intel wants for the newest chips is hard to swallow. Let’s hope that retailers pass on some savings for all the existing single-socket (4-core) MPs with higher clock speeds.

Looking at those ‘last updated’ numbers it really looks like Apple’s getting spread a little thin with all these products (and now with the iPad launch). Is this the beginning of the Sonyization of Apple? Are they starting to lose focus on the various market segments?
