ARM expects over 50 new iPad competitors to launch this year

“The launch of Apple’s iPad will pave the way for a slew of rival products this year, an ARM executive said Wednesday, predicting over 50 tablet PC devices will be launched globally,” Dan Nystedt reports for IDG News.

“‘The first tablet devices will launch in the second quarter by [mobile network] carriers,’ said Roy Chen, ARM’s worldwide mobile computing ODM manager, during a press meeting in Taipei. ‘You’ll see a lot more in the third quarter,’” Nystedt reports. “He said many tablet-like devices will be launched in China, but companies everywhere plan to launch tablets this year, including the top 10 telecommunications network operators. He declined to name specific companies.”

Nystedt reports, “The company showed off two tablet devices at the Taipei news conference, both running Google’s Android mobile OS.”

This is what the ‘competition is good’ supporters never realize. There is 1 or 2 innovators, and hundreds of ‘bring nothing to the table’ clones in most industries. Some even say these clones will ‘keep Apple on its toes’ FALSE! Winners are ambitious people by nature, they are never pushed to compete, they WANT to, AND they mostly compete with themselves, even if they’ve already won. iPad ‘competitiors’ do nothing but follower the leader, without Apple, they’re clueless. Apple is lead by Steve Jobs who intrinsically wants the best for consumers from his company, no one needs to push him at all. A better understanding of business, and corporate culture would lead to a lot less clueless readers, and companies.

I’m with you on this. Some people parrot that “competition is good” cliche like it is an absolute axiom. Competition is good as long as comparatively innovative companies are all driving the state-of-the-art forward. But it does the state-of-the-art no good if the one true innovator is drained of vitality through the bites of a thousand parasites.

Barrier to entry is low. The interesting thing about this story is that presumably, the ARM exec is talking about tablets using an ARM chip, not an Intel one. Up till now, most, if not all tablets were just keyboardless computers. Variations have given us keyboardless netbooks. These all used Windows as an OS.

This ARM exec is talking about mobile chips, with a mobile OS, like Android and not W7 or mobile W7. Thats interesting, but unless they rework some of the interface, they’ll just have blown up phone apps. Optimized apps require more than just scaling, but rethinking some of the UI.

I am definitely getting an iPad, probably the 1st day it’s out, and what will be interesting is to see how Pages, Numbers, and Keynote work compared to Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. What everyone else will be doing is putting Windows 7 (w/ Office) on a touchscreen tablet, but what do you do w/o modifier keys to select text, copy-paste, and a myriad other keyboard-driven tasks? Everyone else’s tablet will be half-assed/half-baked because they think moving and resizing pictures is impressive.

If you build a tablet, someone will buy it. No, I am just messing with you PC box makers, they will get the iPad.

If the tablet is not a superior choice with many thousands of apps, easy to use, networked to a online server like Apple’s iTunes and their BILLION DOLLAR SERVER FARM in North Carolina, no one will want that Windows PC tablet-turd.

The sum total of all those 50 pad products will outsell Apple in a year, but because there will be so many products and manufacturers no one company will make enough to stay in business. So go ahead, buy that iPad knockoff for $100 less. Then try to get support on it in 6 months when it fails. And good luck on the software support from day one.

Competition IS good. As in any market, there will be lots of crap. These are not the competition that helps consumers, obviously. However, tablets running Android are actual competition and, though I think they are behind Apple, Google actually seems to think about the user experience. I don’t think they are as good at this as Apple, but they are actual competition and will serve to occasionally push Apple (I think they are self motivated in this regard usually) but also to grow the market by making such devices more popular. Good for the consumer. Good for Apple.

None of these 50 will compete on the same playing field with the iPad by Apple, where the A4, Battery, Power Management, Firmware, and Screen are all designed, built, integrated, and fine tuned into a beautiful and functional object of desire – topped off with an OS that is all about user experience and embellished by thousands of approved apps with thousands of uses.

Even I will be coveting their cameras, expansion memory slots, larger memory, multitasking, and such as I enjoy the multitude of other features that make the iPad the right choice.

There will be a few Apple haters and bargain hunters that will fall for some of the other boxes….. that is OK, the word of their misfortunes and different levels of dissatisfaction will spread.

I say competition is good… as long as it’s good competition. And this ain’t it.

This is great news for Apple. If there were 1-3 key competitors – like Asus, Acer, Dell or HP – that would be *okay* for the non-iPad customer. This is just going to crowd that segment.

Either it’ll just be a “hot mess” as the kids say (or don’t really say) or there will only be a few left standing… but that gyration will give Apple extra time and wiggle room.

If ARM was smart, they’d focus on a few key Apple competitors. This is just stupid… the iPad will stand out even more so if this is true.
