Apple Board member Al Gore mocked at Apple shareholders meeting

Blowout Specials ends 2/28“Al Gore won a Nobel Prize and an Oscar for his film, An Inconvenient Truth. But in the last three months, as global warming has gone from a scientific near-certitude to the subject of satire, Gore — the public face of global warming — has been mum on the topic,” Gene J. Koprowski reports for FOXNews.com.

“Al Gore won a Nobel Prize and an Oscar for his film, An Inconvenient Truth. But in the last three months, as global warming has gone from a scientific near-certitude to the subject of satire, Gore — the public face of global warming — has been silent on the topic,” Koprowski reports. “The former vice president apparently finds it inconvenient even to answer calls to testify before the U.S. Senate. You can call him Al… but he won’t call back.”

“On Tuesday, Oklahoma Sen. James Inhofe — a prominent skeptic of global warming theory and the Republican leader of the Senate’s Environment and Public Works Committee — issued a request for Gore to come testify on global warming,” Koprowski reports. “In an interview with FoxNews.com, Inhofe said he wants Gore to appear because ‘it will be interesting to ask him on what science he based his movie,’ a film the senator considers ‘science fiction.'”

“Gore has yet to respond, but that didn’t prevent him from causing a stir at Apple’s shareholder meeting Thursday. According to CNET, Gore was seated in the first row while several stockholders bashed his high-profile views on climate change. One reportedly said Gore ‘has become a laughingstock. The glaciers have not melted,'” Koprowski reports. “Gore did not reply, and he has not commented on his blog or Twitter feed.”

“Since his appearance at the Copenhagen climate summit in December, Gore has been reluctant to talk to the media, making only a handful of public appearances,” Koprowski reports. “On Jan. 16, he spoke at the American Library Association conference at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center, and he signed copies of his newest book, Our Choice: How We Can Solve the Climate Crisis. On Feb. 22, at the IBM Pulse Conference in Las Vegas, Gore commented on how the environment was a fantastic business opportunity.”

“The media, meanwhile, have started to ask why the world’s most famous advocate of all things green remains mute on the growing chorus of opposition,” Koprowski reports. “‘The godfather of climate hysteria is in hiding as another of his wild claims unravels — this one about global warming causing seas to swallow us up,’ the editors of Investors Business Daily wrote on Tuesday. ‘We’ve not seen or heard much of the former vice president, Oscar winner and Nobel Prize recipient recently as the case for disastrous man-made climate change collapses.'”

Erica Ogg reports for CNET, ” Apple’s attitude on environmental and sustainability issues was one of the main concerns of the stockholders present Thursday, followed closely by the company’s immense pile of cash. But early harsh comments about former Vice President Al Gore’s record set the tone.”

“Gore was seated in the first row, along with his six fellow board members, in Apple’s Town Hall auditorium as several stockholders took turns either bashing or praising his high-profile views on climate change,” Ogg reports. “At the first opportunity for audience participation just several minutes into the proceeding, a longtime and well-known Apple shareholder–some would say gadfly–who introduced himself as Shelton Ehrlich, stood at the microphone and urged against Gore’s re-election to the board. Gore ‘has become a laughingstock. The glaciers have not melted,’ Ehrlich said, referring to Gore’s views on global warming. ‘If his advice he gives to Apple is as faulty as his views on the environment then he doesn’t need to be re-elected.'”

“Another shareholder immediately got up to defend Gore and endorse his presence as an Apple director. And that wasn’t the end of it. Two different proposals from shareholders were presented in regard to Apple’s environmental impact,” Ogg reports. “Both proposals were ultimately rejected by shareholders.”

“Despite his apparently polarizing nature, Gore was re-elected with the rest of the slate in preliminary results. Proposals regarding changes to an employee stock plan, directors’ stock options, an advisory vote on executive compensation, and selection of Ernst & Young as Apple’s public accounting firm were all passed to complete the official business portion of the event,” Ogg reports. “One shareholder asked if Apple might consider investing in electric-car maker Tesla. To that, Jobs replied he was planning on throwing ‘a toga party’ with the money instead.”

MacDailyNews Take: The results of a poll regarding Al Gore that we ran January 12-17, 2010 are below. We’ve put it up again fresh (top left column of the “big” (non-mobile) site) to see if there’s any appreciable difference now, six weeks later.

  1. @chris f, please educate yourself:

    http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/climatechange/science/explained/explained5.html

There are three centres which calculate global-average temperature each month.

Met Office, in collaboration with the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) at the University of East Anglia (UK)
Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), which is part of NASA (USA)
National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), which is part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) (USA)

  2. Guys, just a hint: Getting your CO2 production down simultaneously gets you out from your doggie-style position relative to the oil-producing countries. But at least some of you seem awfully comfortable that way, don’t you?

Is that of no interest to you whatsoever? Even if you seem unable to distinguish between heavily money-boosted corporate lobbying and actual (if complicated and sometimes partially(!) flawed) science?

In your misguided glee about Al Gore getting ostracized by some of your equally uninformed peers you are cheering for nothing but trying to get screwed yourself even more thoroughly in more than just one way.

But why should I complain? You are clamoring for leaving all the future-energy technologies to us and to the asian countries. We’ll gladly sell these to you, at a decent price, of course.

Given that you’re eager to abandon scientific research on your own, someone will have to take up the slack… ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  3. LMAO. Satellites measuring glacial recession.
How long have satellites been around?
How many periods of extreme heat and cold has the earth experienced in 5 billion years?
We had this new ice age predicted in the 1970s. Never happened.

What you political whores fail to recognize is that this sham is making some folks a shitload of money, while killing the livelihood of others.
If you just said and promoted doing things for the planet as the right thing to do, it would be different.
I do all the things I can to do my part. I’d get solar on my house if it wasn’t so insanely overpriced and ugly.
I’d drive a car that ran on hydrogen if it was here and I could afford it.
    I recycle.
    I turn my lights off.
But I refuse to be bullied and bullshitted into buying this crap.
The “tree data” was based on ONE TREE!
These guys are falling weekly. If your theory is solid and your data likewise, then don’t bullshit.
Until then, it’s algorites making billions off of the scare-tactics.

  4. Also, to HueyLong and others using the term ‘deniers’ . . . good god. As I said, I really don’t know whether global warming is happening or not, and I seriously doubt anyone on the planet truly does. But surely the arguments of the ‘pro’ lobby aren’t so weak they have to invoke the shade of the Holocaust to bolster them? And that’s even before we bring in the basic issue of insensitivity and taste.

  5. Haven’t you guys been paying attention!!! The Earth isn’t warming, it’s freezing!! The right-wingers are right! How can there be global warming when the east coast of the US, it’s completely frozen. It’s most certainly got to be due to the green movement of the past couple years helping reduce carbon emissions and throwing the climate out of whack… The only way we can save ourselves is that we need to start polluting more to re-warm the Earth and bring the climate back into balance! C’mon! Who’s with me!!! Let’s go pollute!!!

  6. @ Gil Bates
“More water evaporates from the oceans, leading to more clouds, leading to more snowfall.”

A vacuous comment. All that you could use your argument for is increased precipitation. You can’t use it as an argument for global warming/climate change/or whatever you want to call it now, when this has been the third COLDEST winter on record.

  7. Al can’t respond.

He’s too busy selling used cards and life insurance again.

I called him a fraud when he came out with his nonsense. He obviously did it to make a lot of money at the expense of “truth”.

    How inconvenient!

  8. “Americans really are the dumbest developed people on Earth.”

Do you really think that helps your position?

First off, you assume that there are ‘undeveloped’ people.
Whoops, sounds a little racist to me.
Does that include your Southern Hemisphere friends?

I guess elitism gives you a very warm feeling, but it is a real turn off to some.

  9. Members of Congress are demanding (1) recall the Nobel, (2) recall the Oscar, (3) investigate Algore for possible criminal violations.

Altogether, these things have made Algore the nation’s first green Billionaire and now we see it was all a fraud.

Of what possible benefit could there be to Apple of having him on their board? Steve loyalty to a fellow liberal is all I can think of.

  10. Hey Fsckhead in LA:

I was merely pointing out that I’m switching to a bias free Mac news site. If you think about it, this entire article is based on one single stockholder making his dislike of Al Gore and his warnings of climate change public on the Apple campus. That was picked up by Fox news, and thus became fodder for Mac Daily News and its patently obvious right wing slant. It makes this tech site a political site, and I’m done with them.

So here’s some free speech for ya:

Once you pull your head out of Glenn Beck’s anal-cysted, coke encrusted ass, you might some day realize that it is in fact you who is drinking the proverbial Kool Aid. Frankly, I don’t give a shit. Live in your little “the world is flat” fantasy land. I prefer reason over ignorance.

    Learn something, caveman:

  11. I will take you Global Warming nuts more seriously when you stop being complete hypocrites. If fossil fuels are killing the world – then you quit using all oil products. Live your beliefs. I think oil is one of the most phenomenal resources we have been given. It has countless uses all of which improve our quality of life. There could not be Apple computers without oil products. We could not manufacture and distribute Apple products with oil. And we have been blessed with lots of oil – we don’t have to get it from Mideast countries – we just have to intelligently use the resources that we have in our country. That means we have to stop allowing the environmental fascists from preventing us from using our own natural resources. These environmental extremists stop us from extracting our own resources – all while they happily consume oil products every day of their sorry existence. True hypocrites. If you don’t believe in oil – stop using now in all its forms or shut up.

  12. @ george

i wouldnt be too confident in those numbers:

    http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/environment/article7026317.ece

    @ concerned european

as much as i wish wind and solar worked well (to reduce pollutants and dependance on foreign governments), they are currently very very expensive. however, even with this deficit, there is a lot more that the powers that be could be doing but are not, not because they cant, but because they wont, because they are still building support from ‘concerned’, dare i say gullible, citizens while they work to maintain control of the energy supply. this CO2 business is a load of bullshit and nothing more than a power and money grab while claiming moral superiority.

  13. @Me In LA

Metorology is not the same as climateology.

I know those are big words, and they don’t normally use those kind of big words on Fox News, but the internet is full of resources for you to learn. Please use them.

  14. @Me in LA
    “LMFAO @ phredcat!
You pinko-commie libtards are all about free speech until someone disagrees with your bullshit.
    This is here for fun.
    Get over yourself already!”

Steve’s a progressive and disagrees utterly and completely with you. Burn.
I think you might find a soulmate in Michael Dell though. There is a place for you in the Windows 7 firmament. Fascist…. tard.

  15. I find the irony staggering – Mac-fans who should be the first people questioning conventional wisdom, manipulation by monopoly corporations and backwards-oriented, stale preconceptions and who should be the first to acknowledge that sometimes the crazy ones, the ones who are getting vilified, who are trying to change things, to push the human race forwards are the ones who may just have a point that merited closer examination.

How you, of all people, can be the ones whose first impulse is to tar and feather anyone who questions the status quo is so mindbogglingly ironic that words fail me to to do it justice.

Maybe you should simply call it a day and switch back to a PC. That should be a much more comfortable fit, with its stale, backwards-minded, conventional and corporate-controlled mindset.

For some who have not entirely dimmed their minds, this might be a reminder what Apple is actually about:

    Enjoy.

  16. Sorry, when your main scientist can’t find his data.

when your main scientist backtracks on the hockey stick graph.

when your main scientist backtracks on the sea levels rising.

when much of your temperature readings have moved to cities over the last few decades.

…and you forget to include temps from the rural area or from colder countries.

    YOU LOSE CREDIBILITY!

    Global warming is a LIE.

    Follow the money.

  17. @phredcat
your source for reason is the daily show? And somehow it is not suprising at all.

    @macromancer
both fields are doing extensive research into global climate change. Seems like you would perfer to get into an argument about terminolgy because you can’t debate on the actual issue.

  18. @Macromancer

Since you know big words so well you obviously know small words like “lies”. That is what the CRU at East Anglia and Michael Mann of Penn State spun in their documented intentional effort to fabricate “science” to support their Global Warming theory. The lies of the CRU are now documented. Phil Jones has stepped down – he was the main scientific arbiter of the debate. So has the UN Climate chief. Are you unaware of the these facts. These facts about lies seem to have escaped your attention. Please do research in the future and learn the truth before spewing your uninformed tripe.
