Apple releases new MobileMe Gallery app for iPhone and iPod touch

Today, Apple’s MobileMe introduced a new Gallery app for iPhone and iPod touch.

The app features iPhone- and iPod touch-optimized controls and gallery displays that make browsing photos and videos easier and more interactive.

The Gallery app is free for MobileMe members and available now on the App Store in iTunes here.

This would seem as much to be about the “tablet” as the iPhone or touch.

Another feature of the important, differentiating dock/sync system that I believe will separate a new Apple device from any others.

MobileMe will not be left out of a new device; “tablet” will showcase the cloud.

The app is nice. Basic but functional. One weird thing though … when I try to play the movies that I have in my gallery – the movies I created and shared using iMovie – I get a “This video cannot be played on this device” error! Hopefully Apple will fix this problem.

Very nice little app, although a couple of my videos which play fine in Safari, won’t play through the app. I guess the iPhone is very finicky about which video formats it can handle.

Very nice app!! I do not have on movies in my gallery so not sure if movies work or not. But like how it works on picture galleries.

Considering how little space photo files use on the iPhone drive, why bother going to the mobile me cloud? I have hundreds of photos in six different albums. They look beautiful, navigate quickly, take very little room, and are always there, signal or not.

I have a number of photo collections and videos in my MobileMe gallery. I often want to share these with my friends/family who have iPhones. Viewing the galleries in Safari on the iPhone has never worked really well, and this app elegantly solves that problem. I see it as just another thing that adds value to my MobileMe subscription.

Why not do both? I have my own specifically designed web site, so I guess that accounts for our different takes. I do also have MobileMe, mostly for delivering files. But for sharing outside of a decent signal area, or for quick use at a meeting, the iPhone’s native photo app is dependable, organized for accessibility, snappy with the horizontal/vertical adjustment, and people love using it.

It looks to me like you would need to give them your login information. I don’t think you can just invite folks to view things without you password. Not sure that is a good plan.
