“Nokia will close its two flagship stores in the United States, a market where the world’s top cellphone maker is struggling to gain ground,” Tarmo Virki reports for Reuters. “Nokia said it would close the stores in New York and Chicago.”
“Improving the company’s position in the U.S. market has been a priority for Chief Executive Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo since he started to run Nokia in 2006,” Virki reports. “Since then, however, the company’s U.S. market share has eroded to well below 10 percent.”
Nokia is also closing one of its two stores in London and its Sao Paolo store… ‘This confirms a turn in Nokia’s retail strategy. It has failed to replicate Apple’s success with this format of store,’ said Ben Wood, director of research at British consultancy CCS.”

MacDailyNews Take: Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo is a perfect CEO for Nokia. They’re both failures.
“iPhone is a niche product.” – Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, April 17, 2008
Want to watch Nokia’s decline? Don’t blink.

The iPhone is a niche product. The niche just happens to be 80+% of the smart phone market. Admitted a rather large niche but a niche none the less.
I wish they had 80% market share, but the last time I looked Apple has about 13% of the smartphone market.

Final flight of failure…
It’s hard to say that Nokia “sold” phoned, almost every nokia phone is free with a contract. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />
I think it’s too early to say Nokia is finished as they do have a big presence in the market. But I will say Nokia has been given a massive wake up call and desperately needs to be re-invented.
I think it’s very telling that Nokia’s web site seems to have over a dozen different mobile phones to choose from but Apple essentially has the one phone (just in different versions). The fact is Apple’s iPhone is just so much better than any phone Nokia has.
But then the iPhone isn’t just a phone. It’s more like a digital hub that you keep in your pocket and it’s just so easy to use.
Nokia is great brand, miss the opportunity to rule the world
