“OBJECTIFIED, by filmmaker Gary Hustwit, is the second installment in his trilogy on design (his first was Helvetica),” PBS reports. “OBJECTIFIED encourages us to stop and notice our surroundings and to think critically about creativity and consumption. Who makes all these objects, and why do they look and feel the way they do? How can good design make these things—and by extension our lives—better? What about the environment and the social and environmental costs associated with global manufacturing and planned obsolescence?”
PBS reports, “Featuring interviews with some of the world’s preeminent industrial and product designers, OBJECTIFIED is an exploration of the process at work behind everything from toothbrushes to tech gadgets. It’s about the designers who reexamine, reevaluate and reinvent our manufactured environment daily. It is about personal expression, identity, consumerism and sustainability. What can we learn about who we are and who we want to be from the objects with which we surround ourselves?”
Watch Jonathan Ive, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Industrial Design, talk design here.
[Thanks to MacDailyNews Reader “Martha in Canada” for the heads up.]
Saw it last nite on PBS HD. Ive is in the first 20 mins.
Pics won’t load on iPhone as they are Flash so guess I’ll have too wait until I’m home to have a peek
Next to Steve Jobs, Ive is probably the most critical person at Apple. Take away Jobs and Ive and Apple would probably be developing crap like they did in the 90s within 5 years.
How sad that none of Jonathan Ive’s product design is inspiring or original. They look FUGLY.

Good movie, I got it through iTunes a last month. Helvetica is not bad either. I hope that both Ive and Job’s are inspiring new talent at Apple. I think Apple has seen what can happen if they let people without vision run the company, I am sure the board of directors will do anything not to make the same mistake as they did with sugar water man.
@I’m a PC,
Zune Tang without the humor.
I’m a PC = Zune Tang in disguise.
I’m a PC = something without wit.
When it comes to decisions that matter, Bing & let m$ Decide for you.
I’m all for great design, until form takes precedence over function.
Such as… eliminating needed ports (firewire), or requiring a pocket full of adapter cables (DVI/VGA), or not being able to quickly replace a battery, or having to find a dark space/angle to keep the glare off of a glass screen… all for the sake of design.
How it is possible that Jonathan Ive has so much importance and the creator of the “brown zune” does not? lol
This has nothing to do with this tread, but has any body watch the knight ride TV series? the one with the GT500 instead of the old Trans Am? it is so stupid, I have never see a program so stupid, way too much fantasies and very predictable, they came ou of the problem in a very stupid way. And guess what, I found out why… they use windows ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” /> Look at their monitors and it has a big windows logo in the back (even that Microsoft does not sells monitors or PCs). I just watch it twice (the first one was enough, but I wanted to give it a second chance).
Get a PC asshat.
Sorry for my very bad grammar, but I had to use the PC in my work and PC does not inspire you to do things correct ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />
PC boy says: “How sad that none of Jonathan Ive’s product design is inspiring or original. They look FUGLY.”
You got that right pc boy. Them thar Dells, boy now them’s the lookers. All them racing stripes and lots and lots of buttons, lots of buttons. Lots of little thingy-ma-bobs protrudin out here an there.
Why do you hang out here pc boy? Won’t they let you play at the pc blogs?
Not that zoontang had any real wit but this pc boy pretty much lacks everything. He’s not funny nor clever, he just seems to be upset.
@I’m a PC
Yes, you are. You have our pity. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”raspberry” style=”border:0;” />
Reading PC’s trolls, you start to appreciate ZuneTang’s sarcasm!
@KenC
Nope
It is good that Ive is obsessive. Only can one reach a good solution by revisiting it several times. Sometimes that solution is elusive, but it is good for Apple that both Jobs and Ive are very obsessive indeed.
i am such a sad loner!!!!
http://www.bing.com When it comes to decisions that matter, Bing & Decide
Ive needs to get his ass back to art school fast.
Prissy, ephemeral objects which promote form over function (a cardinal sin in pre-Jobs days) do NOT a ‘designer’ make.
Pssst – watch out for you firewire ports guys, Johnny will have them whipped away before you can say ‘digital video’… spoils his curves, see? – and besides axing them will mean Apple can drive another couple of bucks outta every locked-in customer.
Oh, and what about that matte screen whose colour-accuracy Apple was confirming as ‘preferred by designers’ just a couple of short years ago? Forget it! Johnny-boy can’t admire his reflection in it every day. Besides, offering it as a CHOICE would mean Apple having to take a hit on the obscene profits it earns.
So here’s to ‘designer’ Johnny… a cookie tin, a big-ass metal wardrobe and a table-mirror. No good OS X users?..tough – cuz you’re locked in.
I’m a PC is obviously astroturfing. MDN? Erase?
Twenty Benson,
I really don’t think that Jony Ive makes those decisions.
This is available from Netflix on DVD or Blu-ray.
Unfortunately, not for streaming.
@Twenty Benson
I agree with Cubert, the issues you mentioned were likely not Ive’s doing. In fact, the two decisions you cite have clear business reasons behind them. Two types of screens on every Mac requires twice the inventory. Eliminating firewire on some machines is called product differentiation.
Of course, if you want lots of choices and lots of ports, you can by a Dell or HP. In fact, HP offers so many choices that they are probably running out of numbers to use on their models.
Why is MDN allowing Bing poison its site?
MDN,
Please ban the boring idiot “I’m a PC”.
We would all be grateful!
