Apple sues to stop power adapter knock offs

72 Hour Apple Black Friday Sale“Apple on Monday filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Media Solutions Holdings, a company based in Anaheim, Calif. that allegedly sells knock-off Apple products through several Web sites,” Thomas Claburn reports for InformationWeek.

“Apple’s complaint charges that Media Solutions Holdings… sells ‘various consumer electronic accessories at retail, including knock-off power adapters for use with genuine Apple portable computers,'” Claburn reports.

“Apple claims that some of the power adapters sold through these Web sites violate its “Power adapter” patent, issued in August, 2003,” Claburn reports.

  1. Apple should license the MagSafe adaptor. It’s incredibly limiting that I can only charge my laptop where Apple tells me I can.
I want to be able to charge it in the car, with a solar-panel, on an airplane – but Apple says no. Bastards.

  2. @CC of 0z

They currently provide a semi-solution for planes – it allows you to power but not charge your laptop on a plane.

As well as that, there are lots of products with magnets in them that are fine on planes. So the magnets are not an issue.

I just want to be able to charge my laptop wherever I want!

    Why is that so bad?!

  3. Hmm. I should get me one of those Knockoffs they sell on ebay. My iBook G4’s is snapped open exposing the wires. I have it wrapped under a mound of electrical tape.

I can get one of those chargers for like $10 free shipping on ebay And they actually have the Apple Logo on them, ( Only difference is that you don’t get the status light on the end.) But I’d rather get that than spend over $100 for a Genuine Apple Power Cord for a 5 Y/O laptop which I just did the Shim Mod on the Logic board. I only want it to last me one more year. The adapter too.

  4. “Magsafe power adaptors might have problems getting on board aircraft. Airlines normally frown on allowing magnets of any kind on board their planes (they are considered hazardous materials).”

Yeah, except that the magnet is in the MacBook, not the adaptor connector. That way you can’t accidentally put a magnet next to your hard drive.

  5. “chabig” seems to be right. From what I read on other stories this doesn’t have anything to do with MagSafe but on the flagrant coping of Apple’s square transformers. Used in both MagSafe and the older G4 style of power adaptors.

I’d expect an overseas company to create knock-offs of hot copyright products, but a U.S. based company in Anaheim?

What on earth made them think they could get away with it?

  6. Hey Ron, x, & moo,
you 3 should all go and have a nice circle jerk, while watching bill o’reilly and trying to convince yourselves that Jobs isn’t the flaming liberal he is. Keep politics away from tech news you filthy, stinking trolls :p

  7. @ CC of OZ

Sorry can’t let it go. Your statement is just idiotic. I’m a professional pilot. There has not, never was, never will be, an issue with magnets on airplanes. Why would you declare something without any foundation in truth? Oh, I guess you’re one of those BSers.

    Cheers!
