Epic fail: Microsoft’s Windows 7 crashes and burns on live TV as commentators laugh (with video)

Microsoft’s Mojave-For-Real, Vista service pack, er, “Windows 7” was inflicted yesterday and a Japanese TV show checked it out. It’s in Japanese, but no translation is necessary:

MacDailyNews Take: We love how they cut to the canned video to try to cover the reboots. Macintosh. Because life’s too short. Macをはじめよう。

By the way, Apple has incorporated Multi-Touch™ into their OS in the correct way, on spacious trackpads and the Magic Mouse, not on a vertical screen where fingerprints smudge and users’ arms would quickly tire in what everyone — everyone outside of the PC box assemblers and Microsoft, that is — calls “Gorilla Arm.”

Only Microsoft, in typical half-assed fashion, would take exactly the device designed for viewing and occlude it intentionally when there are far better, far more logical solutions. Perhaps Apple’s patent portfolio has consigned Microsoft to the display ghetto for their ill-conceived touch inputs? If so, we smile.

To us longtime Apple watchers, Cupertino seems to be saying quite clearly, “Multi-Touch™ on the screen only when trackpads/mice are not available/part of the device.

See Apple’s Mac OS X Multi-Touch™ in action: swipe, zoom, rotate, and secondary click. There are more gestures than just those four, but you get the idea. Apple’s Mac OS X Multi-Touch™ actually works.

  1. Yeah thats right my MAC NEVER locked up on me!!! I wish and thats from Apple who is responsbile for the hardware and the os. At least windows has an excuse if the manufacturer of the multi-touch display write crappy drivers is windows really to blame!!

  2. I call dibbs on the IT chick, I’m sure she has a Mac in the back, if not I’ll give her one.

The embarrased presenter had to have set it up and tested it before they went to air, any news caster, let’s call him the weather man, would have done that much just to make sure to not embarras himself.

So it’s set up, tested, 10min to 10hrs later after just sitting there doing nothing and typical for MS is ceases to work. Those were quick reboot times!

  3. I LOVE the new ‘just works’ features. And obviously 100% compatible with all of your favorite hardware! Naturally they picked only the finest hardware for demonstration purposes, but your cheap P.O.S. multitouch screen at home WILL achieve the same performance at home.

So, let’s start the bidding…do I hear $299? Please remember, you are bidding on the software only!

  4. @Ken,

“At least windows has an excuse if the manufacturer of the multi-touch display write crappy drivers is windows really to blame!!”

Seriously? Does that “excuse” make you feel better when things go wrong, every time they go wrong on your computer? You deserve a PC then.

I don’t care about the why as much as the results in this case. Macs work better than Windows machines. They are a BETTER hardware/OS combination.

But hey, if you’re okay with the reboots, registry issues, configuration issues, viruses, spyware removal / protection tools required and in general, the way that over time the machine gets slower, then yes, have fun with your Windows PC.

  5. WHy would you want to put your fingers on your screen? I go crazy when there is the slightest smudge on my 24 inch iMac. It should be good for sales of screen cleaners! What a joke if this is the innovative feature!

  6. While I hate that xp embedded is used, Crestron manufactures fantastic touchpanels for control system interface, and they have been using them for years. The key differential I think is that they had their own world class engineers to in and fix a lot of the xp crap to function on their (admittedly) custom and well engineered panels.

While I absolutely love these crestron panels ( they’re bullet proof and don’t fail) I would never want one for a computer monitor. It doesn’t make sense for data entry and interaction. Touch interface, as has already been pointed out, should only be used when any other type of interface ( mouse, keyboard) is not convenient or comducive to a cohesive and harmonious environment (that sounds a little too much like a granola head- sorry)

  7. They had tested it prior – it just acted like ‘Doze… The man news guy said, “Maybe ‘Doze 7 doesn’t like Fuji TV”. I speak 日本語 (Japanese), and they were just talking about it not working, it should work, etc. Making a few remarks, trying to lighten it up a little for the guy doing the demo. Believe me, the Japanese would have tested it out previous to live TV. And, used top quality equipment. It’s just Windows…

And, touching the screen??!!?? What an absolutely ridiculous idea! What can you expect from a company that links with Burger King in Japan for the first 30 customers to get a SEVEN layer burger for ¥777 to commemorate Windows 7! Wow, just a bad wow… Right, for as long as it takes; and it doesn’t appear to be much longer.

“As much as I would love to say that was Windows failing, it seemed to be the touchscreen hardware.

That being said, it is the problem with windows that MS doesn’t know what crappy components dell or hp are throwing in there at any given time.”

Well, that is just it, Windows is half the solution, and the hardware is the other half, but once you are using it, what really matters is if it works or not, and I have to say that it didn’t, regardless of who’s is at fault. It still sucked and that is why having the hardware and software under one roof is still the way to go.

  9. This is so stupid! You cant blame windows for …….Im just playin, this is your typical cheap microsoft knock off again..again. and to try to be like mac you get to pay 200+ dollars for the honor. As all of you as my witnesses: If Microsoft ever has an original idea ever again I will go back to using a p.c, maybe….ok we will see.
