Gizmodo reviews Apple’s Multi-Touch™ Magic Mouse: ‘The best mouse Apple has ever made’

“The Magic Mouse is undoubtedly the best mouse Apple’s made in years. They’ve taken their knowledge in trackpad finger gestures and one-piece manufacturing and made this delicate, yet sturdy, bridge-shaped mouse. The question is how it compares to other mice,” Jason Chen reports for Gizmodo.

“Even though there’s no clear delineation between right and left buttons on the mouse itself, the Magic Mouse knows to interpret a click on the left or right half appropriately (though right click needs to be activated from inside System Preferences before you can use it),” Chen reports.

“The Magic Mouse is a very, very pretty mouse—something you wouldn’t feel like you had to hide when not in use—and looks different enough from other mice that people will ask who made it, before awkwardly mumbling a nevermind as they spot the grey Apple logo,” Chen reports. “Compared to ergonomic mice, the Magic Mouse is really low and aerodynamic, which means it doesn’t contour to your hand and doesn’t give the sensation that the mouse is a part of your hand.”

“Is this the best mouse Apple has ever made Yeah, it is,” Chen reports. “The Magic Mouse is much better than the Mighty Mouse, which [some] people hated, and might actually be good enough that non-Mac users might want to pick it up as well, supposing that they don’t really care about ergonomics. Since it fills the gap between a tiny travel mouse and a full sized desktop mouse, the Magic is in a good position to grab users on both ends.”

  1. “The best mouse Apple has ever made”

That’s like saying that Windows 7 is the best OS that Microsoft has ever made. I’ll check it out at the Apple store but highly unlikely that it’ll beat Logitech.

  2. So, how long before someone comes up with software that allows the user to turn it into a full fledge trackpad? (not just swipe to turn the page)
Not that it needs to be done, it’s a mouse after all, but someone will because they can.

  3. I would guess that it is ‘ergonomic’ as they put it, because as a multi touch mouse with gestures the last thing you want is a mouse that fits into the contours of the hand. Not sure how the gestures would work if it did so, as ‘ergonomic’ mice are specifically designed so that you do not move the hand more than marginally. Would be rather like a modern computer controlled unstable military jet designed for maneuverability being… well aerodynamically stable.

  4. does anybody know whether there is a third and fourth “button” on the new mouse? i just love how i can use exposé and spaces by clicking the click whell and the side buttons on the mighty mouse. if this functionality goes away then this new mouse won’t be for me unfortunately.

  5. Chen isn’t very bright is he? I mean for a tech writer, you’d think he’d have read by now, windows users need not apply.

But as sure as you can say xerox, there’ll be a windows version in the pipeline in a couple of weeks.

  6. I disabled the squeeze buttons on my Mighty Mouse because I kept activating them by accident. I don’t see an option for the third button in the postings of the control panel. I use that one for dashboard on the Mighty Mouse.

The only problem I have with the Mighty Mouse is that the damn trackpea craps out every couple of weeks and I have to clean it. DO NOT touch it if you’ve touched a salty snack with your mouse hand.

Actually, I think xerox invented the mouse…

Xerox hired a guy who brought his mouse invention with him, so yes xerox has always received the credit. Unfortunately, they never found a use for it outside their labs.

Jobs took one look at it and said, I know exactly what to do with it. That was in the Seventies, and Jobs’ still not done perfecting the mouse.

It’s close though. We no longer have to push the mouse around to move the cursor, like trackballs, and I envision a day when Apple will be the first offer a cursor controlled by your eyes.

  8. Geez, Apple; just enable right-click by default already.
They didn’t like multiple-button mouses back in the eighties: WE KNOW. Now they need to get over it already and admit they were wrong on that one.
At this point they look like a whiny 8 year old.

  9. “It’s a mouse.OK?”

Many have very specific choices when it comes to an implement and sight that you may use all day and sits on your desk.

Many are vociferous in their mouse (or mouse-trackball) choices, have adamant preferences, and spend extra bucks for their preference. It matters a lot to lots of people.

  10. I have two Mighty Meese, and they are the best ever. I disable the right-click option, as control-click works fine for the very few times I want to “right-click.” Poor Windows sufferers have to right-click a lot, as MS hid a lot of stuff there, but it can cause a lot of problems in Photoshop when you accidentally right-click. It happens.

  11. I can’t wait to try one.

I’ve discovered that most “Ergonomic” mice are recipes for carpal tunnel. I always use small laptop mice because I can use the mouse while keeping my wrist pretty much straight. Hard to describe exactly, but suffice to say that any sort of angle to the wrist will result in future pain.

Anyway, it looks like this is small and low slung enough to work
