Now would-be ‘Mac cloner’ Psystar sells Mac OS X Snow Leopard virtualization to third-parties

“In spite of an ongoing legal dispute with Apple, clone Mac maker Psystar Monday announced plans to license its virtualization technology for Mac OS X to third-party hardware vendors,” Slash Lane reports for AppleInsider.

“The new Psystar OEM Licensing Program will allow Intel machines to run Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. The announcement is a bold move likely to catch the ire of Apple, which plans to start its trial against the Florida-based company in January 2010.,” Lane reports.

“The new program will allow manufacturers to have hardware certified by Psystar, and allows use of the company’s Darwin Universal Boot Loader. The software will allow manufacturers to install Snow Leopard by inserting the disc from Apple — no additional steps would be necessary, the company said,” Lane reports.

  1. There’s being defiant, and there’s waving your d*ck in the other party’s face. This smacks of the latter.

C’mon, who in their right mind would take Psystar up on this? And risk being named in future lawsuits? This is a publicity stunt. I think Psystar’s a little upset that the mainstream tech media pretty much ignores them except for when there’s news about the trial, so they pull stunts like this to get in the news.

  2. @ LordRobin – Agreed, definitely a publicity stunt. Quite similar to what Palm has been doing with iTunes, actually…

…and both Palm and Psystar seem to be working towards taking away Apple’s exclusive rights to their own products… hmmmm… perhaps there’s a funding connection here?

  3. Does anybody else see the similarity in brazenness between the Pre/iTunes issue and this one?

I’ve long held a suspicion that Elevation Partners was behind Psystar’s activities.

    Just a hunch. For now.

  4. I am starting to wonder about the funding behind both Palm’s and Psystar’s legal efforts- I don’t usually pay any attention to conspiracy theories, but I am beginning to take a second look at this particular one. It smells of a small pile of excrement that originated in the Seattle, WA area…

  5. @Joe,

Really?!?! How long have you been a MacUser? You should know by now that that is anathema to the very idea of anything coming out of Cupertino…

    Please try again…

  6. Isn’t that something, the cat is out of the bag, there might be tons of Apple clones on the way to stores around the world soon.

This trick might be a good tactic to keep Apple away from their business:”Look, if you make us to close down, we just release our software to everybody (by accident)”.

  7. “Hmm, honestly, Apple should consider licensing the OS so that non-apple hardware will run it. it would dramatically open up the market for them.”

    Major (!!!) problems with this:

    1) One of the reasons why OS X runs so well is that it is confined to a (relatively) small grouping of hardware permutations. Apple does not and will never want to write drivers for thousands of motherboards, sound cards, and whatever other garbage there is out there. This is a large reason why Windows is such a POS.

    2) Apple’s revenue would go down, dramatically. They make nearly as much revenue on a quarterly basis now as Microsoft (especially in the holiday and back-to-school quarters). Close to half of this is in Mac sales, which would fall like a rock if Apple ever licensed OS X.

    3) Falling revenue means less R&D;funding over the long term. That means Macs suffer, OS X suffers, iPods suffer, and the iPhone suffers.

As a direct result of the above 3 factors (and others) it would be patently stupid for Apple to license OS X in the current situation. It will never happen in the next 5-10 years at least, and I’m inclined to say that it will never happen at all. Apple does NOT need market share. That is a common misconception. As long as revenues are increasing and Mac sales are increasing, as a shareholder and Apple fan I am a happy camper.
