RUMOR: Steve Jobs plans Apple tablet launch in early 2010; new Apple TV due soon

“Steve Jobs has reportedly taken personal charge of the forthcoming Apple tablet, working to get the details right while aiming for a 2010 launch. Meanwhile, overtime in the Apple TV group, plus last week’s price cut, suggest a new model could be here soon,” David Coursey reports for IDG News Service.

Apple TV “appears on-track for a refresh. I am a tad concerned about the timing for this if units are going to be available in quantity in time for the holidays,” Coursey reports. “Sources tell me the Apple TV teams–hardware and software–have been putting in a lot of hours lately. How that translates into a ship date has yet to be revealed.”

Coursey opines, “I find the tablet rumor credible. Believe Apple is about to get serious with a new Apple TV, and hope that Apple TV will make it out in time for Christmas.”

But this time, the rumor about a new AppleTV is TRUE. I know, because I just bought an AppleTV last night. So, in 15 days, they’ll be announcing a new one. Superior features, lower price, etc.

Yeah Steve is working on the iTab, not news, he said he was “polishing” it, focused on it. He’s always been after a direct intuitive finger experience with nothing in the way.

Whenever it comes out, it will be new, revolutionary, fun, gaming and game-changing and just a hint of what it will become 3 years from launch.

I still dream of some sort of snazzy integration/conversion of the tablet concept and the AppleTV. Maybe the ATV team is working to get it aligned and they’ll both emerge fully formed from Zeus’ brow or something. Wherein Zeus=Jobs.

No TV-recorder, no mass-adoption. People are used to and want to record TV shows. I hope Apple gets this and take a hit in the short term with their a-la-carte offering. In the long run a-la-carte will win because of its convenience.

Why the heck would you get an AppleTV now, when it’s quite obvious that product is about to be updated? OK, we can’t be SURE, but it is very, very likely based on past history that this will happen before the Christmas holiday period. Sort of like it was very likely there would be a September update for the iPods. (BTW, if the update happens in the next couple of weeks, you may still be able to return the one you bought and exchange it for the new one.)

I had to laugh at your post, because my son’s birthday is in early August, and two years in a row, he wanted some form of iPod and each year, they updated whatever I just bought him. I’ve already told him, from now on, if he wants a new iPod, he’s waiting until mid-September.

I feel for you. I understand why you bought now, too. The new price is really enticing.

I agree with you. I think Apple needs to include a DVR to get the thing into people’s living rooms. Then, Apple offers the option to purchase the show when there is a recording conflict, and slowly people will start to realize that iTunes is a legitimate option for TV episodes. Even better, if they released an iTunes subscription option, the Apple TV could tag the series you record and point you in the direction for potential savings. This price comparison could even be a selling point (Do you really need to pay $xx a month for cable?). Sure, it wouldn’t be the right option for everyone (sports fans are one demographic, since iTunes doesn’t offer live games), but it would bring more people into the iTunes video ecosystem.

I’d buy an Apple TV DVR the day it came out.

All I need to complete my home theater setup is simple to use DVR to timeshift record those few OTA shows I watch at those times I am unable to do so.

I don’t want to pay some third party for a “subscription” for some sort of programming guide from cable/satellite/online company to get it to work. And certainly I don’t want to pay any online service to view or “rent” those shows online.

I want something that’s as simple and easy to use as any of my old VCRs… only with a hard drive instead of tape. They didn’t require “subscriptions.”

What beats the hell out of me is why it appears no company wants to make such a device. VCRs revolutionized TV viewing and made the manufactures fortunes until DVD appeared. IMHO, Tivo went the wrong direction. They should have bet on consumers, rather than trying to appease the studios.
