AT&T hints: iPhone 3.1 to ship next week, offer MMS and more

“AT&T has hinted a new version of the iPhone OS will ship later this month, iPhone Software 3.1,” Jonny Evans reports for 9 to 5 Mac.

“The new software is likely to deliver on some of the promises made to AT&T users when iPhone 3.0 shipped, specifically MMS messaging (at last) and the capacity to engage in Bluetooth file transfers,” Evans reports.

“iPhone 3.1 will also likely offer support for any of those features we’ve been hearing so much rumour and speculation about, such as social networking of iTunes songs played, potentially a subscription-based streaming music service and more,” Evans reports. “Whatever the content of the new patch, we’re pretty certain we’re going to know by the middle of next week on September 9.”

I hope that tethering is officially supported. I understand the the method I am currently using to enable that function will be broken by OS 3.1 Hopefully a workaround would eventually appear, but would be ideal to not lose tethering for any amount of time. Riding on Amtrak is much more pleasant with internet access.

Ahh, MMS, when you absolutely, positively can’t wait 5 minutes for a FREE email.

The instant gratification of this current generation is pathetic. I wish we could have a week where everyone is forced to experience work in 1980.
-Before overnight letters, faxing for the average office, email, cell phones, voice mail and god forbid…texting.

I think the average teenager and 20 something would just implode from the lack of patience.

MMS works like TEXT Messaging and can be sent to Phone#… Email is boring… you need to first know the exact email address.
And then, the other person may not even check email – there is no push-notification for email – or shall I say instant notification.
Also, not everybody has Smart Phone with paid Data Plans for accessing websites/emails… MMS/SMS works beautifully.

In the future, when emails have instant nofications, I can see SMS/MMS fading away. Until then, we need MMS

I used the instructions here:

It works great, but yes, it will at some point disable visual voice mail. What happens is that you install a profile at Settings>General>Profiles. When you enable that profile, you can then enable tethering. At some point after that, visual voice mail becomes disabled. You have access to old messages, but not new messages coming in. You can check you new messages by calling your own phone number.

You can re-enable visual voice mail by removing the tethering enabled profile. This is done by just going to Settings>General>Profiles and clicking to remove it. When you do this, your visual voice mail will be active, and messages that weren’t there before will show up.

Once you’ve done this the first time, you’ll find it’s really easy to do this back and forth. I put the tethering profile on my own server and created a shortcut for it, so it’s a very quick and easy install.

All of this being said…remember that this goes against the contract. Nobody knows what AT&T;might do if they discover you’ve been tethering. They could ban you from their service, charge you an outrageous fee, or maybe just frown upon it. In other words, don’t be using this for bittorrent. I’m only using it in urgent situations where I don’t have much of an option.

Oh please, it’s not so much the instant gratification, its the fact that whenever you get someone’s number you have to ask what provider they have and look like a jackass when you have to explain that your 200$+ phone can’t do simple MMS.

Even opening a MMS message can take a good 10 minutes, when the viewmymessage website is working correctly, and if it isn’t then you have to keep hitting refresh till it finally works. At least Apple put copy and paste so you don’t have to use a computer so you can see the pictures people send to your phone.

To be honest, ATT is at fault here, Apple probably told them a good while ago (unless they don’t communicate at all but come on) and they barely started working on it 2 weeks before 3.0 came out.
