“An updated USBConfiguration.plist in the most recent version of iPhone OS 3.1 beta offers compelling evidence that Apple has continued development on an unknown device, referred to as ‘iProd,’ that was first discovered in March,” Jeff Smykil reports for Ars Technica.
“As most Apple devices are assigned the ‘1,1’ designation in the first revision, this leads us to believe that there is indeed an unknown product inside of Apple under active development running the iPhone OS,” Smykil reports.
“While it’s easy to speculate that this may be the rumored Apple tablet we keep hearing so much about lately, we have yet to find any evidence that iPhone OS 3.1 is capable of running on a device with a tablet-sized screen. It’s just as possible it may refer to the camera-equipped iPod nano, though we doubt such a device would run iPhone OS. Hell, it might even be an iPhone nano,” Smykil writes. “What we are willing to bet on is that with a 1,1 moniker the product will see public release soon—perhaps as early as September, when Apple typically unveils new iPods.”

If the Mac touch runs iPhone OS, that’ll be a bummer. We want real OS X.
While we can speculate all we want — my take is that Apple will not come out with something unless it is a game changer, i.e., after a bunch of MP3 players were out there, it came out with the iPod, when a bunch of smart phones it came out with the iPhone……now with Kindle & eReader & lousy net books, Apple will come out with the new iBook. The NBT is a device that contains hundreds of books, plus music, movies & the net, virtual keyboard …. and eventually (maybe now?) a phone. Think of what Apple did with (some say to, but I say they did themselves in) the music industry, it can do the same to/for the book industry. It is ripe for a game changer. The key is readability, storage and, of course, content in the form of books, newspapers, magazines, journals….We have the iTunes Store, we have the App Store, now the Book Store. What could be simpler. And while the publishers gear up, the iBook’s other functions will get people in the door. I cannot wait.
If it turns out to be sort of a larger version of an iPod Touch. I hope it runs Mac OS 10 as well as iPhone/iPod Touch apps.
Why does no one think of the name iBook???
This is the resurrection of the iBook after it was putting in operation room for 3 years.
Now it time to show off what Apple had done over the past few years.
I’m a big fan of World of Warcraft. Do you think WOW will work on a tablet?
One of the things I’ve never totally understood nor had explained to me was this.
When the iPhone was first announced, I specifically remember them (maybe even Steve Jobs) said that the iPhone contained OS X and not a striped down version.
So.. My questions are..
(a) if the iPhone is really OS X…then why can’t I run iPhone aps on my Mac computer or have them ported over?
(b) will the iTablet be OS X as an operating system or iPhone 3.x as an operating system??
I guess the
@foofan…
Im a big fan as well. But, I don’t think Apple is going in that direction…unless Blizz makes major game adjustments.

Look two comments up from yours…
Since the fall of the Soviet Union, Apple watching has replaced Kremlin watching as a major source of idle speculation.
I think with Software 3.1 the iPhone will be able to accept connections using a kind of iPod Connector-to-USB adapter in order to connect Printers, scanners, hard drives or whatever to the iPhone. It would be great to scan images or print photos direct with the iPhone/ iPod Touch without needing a computer! Or just transfer media to a pen drive.
At times like these I always think back to Jeff Han’s demo of Multi-touch back in 2007…
have only scratched the surface with all this Multi Touch technology, there’s much, much more on the way, it’s just a matter of time.

The new iProd, by Apple.
Kid giving you lip? iProd.
Wife nagging you? iProd.
Whatever the issue, there’s an iProd for nearly everything!
Bovine around the world are rejoicing.
iProd = i product = unannounced “i” named device.
Of course, there are some other possibilities that it could be:
iPod Touch revision.
iPod typo.
Or my personal favorite, the all-new Chinese iPod, or as the Chinese refer to it, iProd!
i am also convinced it will be called iBook.
everyone already knows the name, it is a good reference to the killer app (ebooks, magazines, newspapers) and also has the portable computer connotation.
the iphone os is perfect for that form factor. it is a new paradigm of mobile computing. of course you can’t edit excel sheets or do heavy layouts in indesign. but that’s not what it’s for. it is an app and media machine with all the content you can imagine just one click away.
this thingy will change everything. again.
iProd, therefore I am.
Finally, a device perfect for making multimedia entertainment as well as viewing it. And you know what kind of entertainment I’m talking about. The commercial growth will ne huge.
It’s true that the iPhone/iPod touch and the Macs both use OS X, but they both use their own flavors of OS X, OS X iPhone and Mac OS X, respectively. If you notice, they are very careful as to say that it runs a full version of OS X, but not Mac OS X. Each of the OS X’s are tailored to run the specific needs of the machine it is operating one. The core basics are the same though.
From Wikipedia:
The iPhone OS or OS X iPhone is the operating system developed by Apple Inc. for the iPhone and iPod touch.[2][3] Like Mac OS X, from which it was derived, it uses the Darwin foundation.[4] iPhone OS has four abstraction layers: the Core OS layer, the Core Services layer, the Media layer, and the Cocoa Touch layer. The operating system takes less than 240 Megabytes of the device’s total memory storage.[5]
Its the new ipod touch, DUR!!!!!!!!
think people THINK!!!
still maybe need to tidy up the OS naming! iPhone/iPod running iPhone OS is a bit award and adding another device; more so. OS X isn’t given enough credit even if it is officially OS X iPhone, I think?
OS X Mobile would make sense. Also help Mac sales with the clearer association of OS X.
Still to be seen if this new device is pure speculation or not and if not then if it’s a Mac or an “iPhone”!?!
Now that M$FT is trying PILLAGE and clone all apps in the Apple app store (see the previous story about M$FT encouraging developers to port iPhone apps to Microsoft Phone), rather than make their own app store, I can see how a new advancement in the iPod touch and iPhone lineage is needed…
Follow me… what will keep Apple iPhone and touch developers interested in Apple as their number 1 platform? More, and advanced, hardware products which consumers will buy to run those apps!
A bigger screen — great for games, reading, text, web, ebooks, copy and paste from books and text to yourself, everything becomes available at your fingertips — literally. Bigger screen, a fantastic gaming experience. Great for movies and video. This has to be the next step.
If I were a touch / iphone games developer, I’d be praying for this to happen.

iProd? It’s a remote, taser-based cattle prod designed for ranchers and cowpokes on the go who have to stay in touch with the home base. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />
