Microsoft’s Windows Vista has won the 2009 Fiasco Awards, which were awarded last Thursday in Barcelona.
Windows Vista, Microsoft’s flagship operating system, was launched on January 30th, 2007. Its candidacy stated that an operating system must be robust and reliable, and that before marketing it you have to carry out all the necessary tests to ensure that its functionality and performance achieve satisfactory levels.
Out of the 6,403 people who voted online, 5,222 considered Windows Vista a “Great Fiasco.”
The Fiasco Awards’ First Edition, weighted the votes to ensure that an opportunity was given to local projects, has also given a consolation prize to SAGA, the Administration and Academic Management System of the Catalan Government. Its candidacy argued that an application that does not solve the needs of users is, by definition, a fiasco.
The Fiasco Awards are an initiative of a group of people linked to the ICT sector which wants to reward the best non successful projects in the area. The Award wants to promote critical spirit and a positive attitude towards failure, which is a necessary stage in the road to success.
Since its launching, the project has received 23 online nominations for the 2009 Fiasco Awards. Among these, the jury chose the nine finalists: Google Lively; Windows Vista; Second life; Autonomix, the Free Software packs distributed by Public Administrations; Maresme Digital; Mobuzz.tv; DAB, the digital radio; and SAGA, the Administration and Academic Management System of the Catalan Government.
