RUMOR: Steve Jobs’ health declining rapidly, reason for MacWorld Expo cancellation – Gizmodo

“According to a previously reliable source, Apple misrepresented the reasons behind MacWorld and Jobs’ keynote cancellation,” Jesus Diaz reports for Gizmodo. “The real cause is his rapidly declining health. In fact, it may be even worse than we ever imagined:”

Steves health is rapidly declining. Apple is choosing to remove the hype factor strategically vs letting the hype destroy apple when the inevitable news comes later this spring.

This strategic loss will be less of a bang with investors. This is why MacWorld is a no-go anymore. No more Steve means no more hype. Saying they are no longer needing [MacWorld] is the cover designed by the worldwide “loyalty” department.

Diaz reports, “This source has repeatedly been 100% correct before. Those times, however, were always related to news and images of unreleased Apple products. I can only hope that, in this more personal matter, it is absolutely wrong and this just means that Steve Jobs is retiring according to his plan.”

MacDailyNews Take: “I can tell you that sources inside the company tell me that Jobs’ decision was more about politics than his pancreas. Sources tell me that if Jobs for some reason was unable to perform any of his responsibilities as CEO because of health reasons, which would include the Macworld keynote, I should ‘rest assured that the board would let me know.'” – Jim Goldman, CNBC, December 16, 2008

MacDailyNews Note: Barron’s has picked up the Gizmodo rumor report here.

  1. I hope this is NOT true.
Steve Jobs is one of the smartest people on the planet.

Damn, I HATE these articles, they just leave you feeling shitty, because you dont know WTF is going on……

  2. If I was being honest, I just dont think I could handle Steve Jobs demise.
He is one of my heroes – and the list is pretty short.

DAMN. Dont let this be true, a world without the Steve is a dull world indeed.

  3. Well, this is the easiest rumor to regurgitate, since it’s been in the works in one form or another for months/years.

This stated strategy of pulling out of MacWorld to slowly step back from the SJ hype does not sound at all like how SJ runs the company.

If / when Steve steps down, it will be a simple announcement. No weird strategizing.

Instead, I think there was a fallout or realignment with / regarding the MacWorld Expo show. I’ve heard it costs Apple $1 M to attend the show and give a keynote. I think Apple wants to release products and announcements on their own schedule and avoid the major distraction the show must be for the company and its internal scheduling and allocating of worker time and resources.

  4. Of course it’s manipulation, Steve already told Jim Goldman of CNBC if he were ill, they’d know about it. Gizmodo needs to be investigated.

Of course, Eric Savitz of Barron’s would pick this up, he reports anything negative about Apple. That’s his schtick.

  5. Steve, would you please iSight yourself doing a few flips and cartwheels and post it on youtube with a universal calendar and clock in the background??? Hold a press conference or something and please put these rumors to rest.

  6. Apple has been looking to dump Mac World for the last few years. But, their contract with IDC prevented it. Now that the contact is in it’s last year. Apple will stay with MacWorld this year. CES is a big show and they’ve been wanting Jobs to keynote at CES for years and years. 2010 will be a big year for Apple at CES and expect to see a Steve Jobs Keynote at CES then.

No One is looking forward to the CES’ 2009 Keynote right now… but, if a last second bump of Monkey boy for Steve Jobs would certainly add a lot of excitement to a CES 2009 that is looking to be a lot scaled back and hum drum at best. The Dull Microsoft Monkey Boy keynote is not helping to excite interests either.

  7. You guys will believe anything Jobs says. He’s proven that you can’t believe everything he says. Apple has shown in the past that they hide details about his health. Details that would severely affect Apple’s stock.

Lately he simply has not looked as healthy as he has in the past. There is something going on that they are keeping quite. They are trying to put another face(s) on Apple before they come to a point where they can’t hide Steve’s health any longer.

I hope that he is fine but it doesn’t seem like he is.

  8. You would think that the computer industry news would be just a bit above the disgusting crap news we get from normal established media outlets.

If I wanted rumors, lies, and buckets of unsubstantiated FUD, I could easily go to ABC, CBS, NBC, The New York Times, CNN, MSNBC, OR AIR FREAKING AMERICA.

From people who specialize in reporting on technology though, I expect better. I don’t know why, I just do.

Even if the stories about Steve are true, and I truly hope they are not, it serves no one to propagate the rumors.

Apple is not one man. It is a company, not a cult of personality. If Steve leaves or even dies, Apple will go on and that is his gift to the world.

So Gizmodo, STFU. I for one and removing you from my bookmarks.

  9. Steve,

I hope you are happy. You have accomplished amazing things and made many of our lives better in numerous ways. We bow to you for your leadership and vision, for you’ve had our best interests at heart. The world is filled with junk-hoarders and you stood out from the pack. Thank you.
