Apple releases Java for Mac OS X updates for 10.5 Leopard, 10.4 TIger

Apple has released Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 2 which delivers improved reliability and compatibility for Java SE 6, J2SE 5.0 and J2SE 1.4.2 on Mac OS X 10.5.4 and later.

Apple has also released Java for Mac OS X 10.4, Release 7 which delivers improved reliability and compatibility for Java 2 Platform Standard Edition 5.0 and Java 1.4 on Mac OS X 10.4.11 and later. This release updates J2SE 5.0 to version 1.5.0_16 and Java 1.4 to version 1.4.2_18.

The updates are available via Software Update and also as standalone installers.

I love the whole idea of programming once and it runs on anything. Apple hasn’t been the best at keeping up with their Java Virtual Machine, but I’m glad that we get an update every once and awhile. Keep up the good work, Apple.

When used in the right situation, Java can be quite handy:

I use this live map to judge where busses are so I’m not waiting in the pouring rain for 20-30 minutes. I only wish I could get this live map on the iPhone.

They have a cell phone version (and an iPhone layout in particular), but you have to refresh to see updates.

That being said, this is the only application I’ve actually used besides image uploaders where Java was a tremendous help.
