Sony PlayStation 3 tops Microsoft Xbox 360 in sales for first time; Nintendo Wii still leads

“Sony’s PlayStation 3 video-game console topped Microsoft’s Xbox 360 in U.S. unit sales for the first time in January, but the Redmond company said its sales were hurt by supply shortages,” Todd Bishop reports for The Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

MacDailyNews Take: Does it really matter what a company that will say anything says?

Bishop continues, “The PlayStation 3 sold 269,000 units for the month, according to statistics released by the NPD Group market research firm. That was just behind Nintendo’s Wii, which sold 274,000 units, NPD said. Microsoft sold 230,000 Xbox 360 consoles. ‘We certainly believe that this is an anomaly,’ said Microsoft spokesman David Dennis of the Xbox 360’s third-place finish.”

MacDailyNews Take: That’s also what they said when the space shuttle blew up.

Bishop continues, “Sony, in a statement, pointed to progress in areas including movie studios’ embrace of the Blu-ray next-generation DVD format, which the PS3 uses.”

MacDailyNews Take: Microsoft, in stark contrast, sells HD DVD players for its third-place console which, we hear, you can get really, really cheap nowadays.

  1. ‘We certainly believe that this is an anomaly,’

MacDailyNews Take: That’s also what they said when the space shuttle blew up.

Anomaly: A deviation, irregularity, or an unexpected result.

I don’t get the MDN Take. Is MDN implying that every space shuttle flight from not on is going to blow up because that is now the norm instead of being an anomaly? Does MDN also have something against NASA?

  2. “…the Redmond company said its sales were hurt by supply shortages.”

What a load. You can walk into almost any retailer that sells game systems and there’s no shortage of XBox systems.

I can see this and I’m not even into video games.

  3. “Since all the major games are multiplatform titles” like Halo ???????

Is this story related to Apple because MDN see the consoles as competitors to the AppleTV? I know Apple would love to shift the AppleTV in the same kind of numbers as they shift consoles.

  4. Also the ps3 has rechargeable wireless controllers. Grand theft auto 4, fallout 3, metal gear all coming out for it. I get to play whatever online content included in games for free.
plus I get watch blu ray disks on my hi def tv and stream content from my Macs.
yep, should have stuck with the xbox for two crappy games, just like I should have stuck with windows because everyone else loves it.

  5. LOL, “anomaly”?!? Last year, in the 1st quarter and 2nd quarter, they only shipped a couple hundred thousand units, after stuffing the channel in Xmas. They did the same thing this year, stuffed the channel for Xmas, to hit their year-end shipping forecast. And, just like last year, their retailers are screaming about all the excess inventory in their warehouses, so MS has to sit on it, and make up excuses about “supply shortages”. Wink wink.

I’ll wait for Eran to blow this nonsense out of the water, in his next article at Roughly Drafted. He basically predicted that Xbox was on a decline, while PS3 was about to pass it, and PS2 and Wii were still far ahead.

  6. > I can’t wait to see the ‘MDN Take’ for the ‘Zune overtakes I-Pod in sales’ story. Should be any day now…

Hahaha…one of your best lines, ZT!

I must say, the Microsoft spin department follows the same principles used by the Axis propaganda machine during the big war: Whatever it takes….

  7. That’s also what they said when the space shuttle blew up.

IIRC, at the time of the Challenger disaster, the Shuttle program had been less dollar-costly for NASA than what the Xbox program has been for MS.

Oh where the world could be today, if it weren’t for the scourge of MS software, and a failed fleet of rickety space trucks…

  8. Who needs blu ray at this point you have downloadable services which look almost as good without the hassles. Face it for the most part the only winner of the format war is downloadable content. I’m downloading a movie right now and save the I like watching my movies 30 times those things just collect dust.

  9. ‘Sony blames the problem on developers and developers blame the PS3’s handling of memory.’

This was an issue with the PS2 initially as well. It was resolved pretty handily over the course of the console’s life as developers became more acquainted with it. When it first debuted way back in 2000, a lot of people were saying similar things about it. At the time, Microsoft was partnered with Sega on the Dreamcast, stealing a lot of great ideas for the original X-Box (the original X-Box controller was essentially a Dreamcast controller with softer edges, for example) whic had yet to debut.

Those were the reasons I bought the original X-Box: continuations of Dreamcast titles like Jet Grind Radio, Shenmue, etc . . . never cared much for Halo (not dissing here, to each their own, but hello! That was a title Microsoft stole with their fortune!), although driving the vehicles was a hell of a lot of fun.

I’m sure a little further down the line the PS3 will rock if given the chance, and hey, it’s got Blu-ray!

  10. And the fact is that PS3 has massive potential to improve, whereas the Xbox is pretty much already overclocking its potential. Even Microsoft must wince at the cost of trying to produce a new competitive product to match the PS3’s power or the Wi’s innovation. And even if they do they have no real hope of penetrating the Asian market to any great extent. Dead man walking though MS’s ego will keep the zombie going indefinately no doubt. Hey boys spend that money.

  11. 1) this thread belongs on mdn because apple is part of the br consortium and if sj made an hd drive as a bto option, it would only be a br. sony/br prevailed because sony, in spite of its shaky history in format wars, took the risk and made the br drive an integral part of the ps3. that is very sj like (remember floppies and serial connectors?). they deserved to win because they took the long view, again like sj. ms always takes the short view. they sometimes win because they overwhelm the competition with huge their capital reserves. only companies like sony, google and apple can stand up to them. when they do, the odds are not in ms’s favor because they don’t seem to be able to think long term, except to kill off competition. apple, sony, google, on the other hand think about expanding markets (ipod/iphone are examples of that-google is oogling mobile search as an exapnding market, while ms is racing to just catch up on desktop search). the next gen optical format was about expanding markets because the current gen is going nowhere for a while.
    2) shuttle comment criticism misses the point. the dig is against nasa, which basically risk managed those astronauts to their death (both times). it is relevant to the thread and not disrespecting those who lost their lives and the families that lost their loved ones. risk managed, means the flaws that caused the disasters were preventable and known beforehand. calling the xbox slippage and anomaly when you know the real reasons for the slippage is a parallel to the mdn comment and needs no apology. the joke is on nasa, not the ones that perished. a joke on nasa in this case is actually respectful in a twisted kind of way if the guilt resulting from it prevents the next one..

  12. Alright, I must agree with some of the other posters. This is getting a bit ridiculous. Microsoft is just a company not the the anti-christ. And…as for space shuttle humor, one did blow up as recently as 2003. It’s a bit tasteless…maybe if the joke was a bit more clever I could forgive it. Haha.

  13. My PS3 hooked to a 60″ Sony SXRD HDTV (yeah! acronyms!) is amazing. So much so that I would much rather see a movie on it than in theaters.

Unfortunately, Sony does not have the same talent Apple does for user interfaces. If only the PS3 could acquire some kind of AppleTV interface….

  14. the 360 is just like a pc

the ps3 is just like a mac

that’s WHY mdn posted aboot it

the 360 is unreliable , badly made , noisy and requires a vast amount of extra hidden expense to get on line

    x box live = extra

    internet aerial = extra

    rechargeable batteries = extra

    hd dvd = extra

on the ps3 that’s all standard equipment and FREE

the ps3 is all built in and just works

and unlike the ms pos it was built looking forward not to a price

  15. “Microsoft is just a company not the the anti-christ.”

Too bad. Because then Armageddon would be delayed by at least another thousand years when the final battle is designed by incompetent Microsoft executives and committees. But the four horsemen would be translucent. Meanwhile, Satan is getting bored. His hunting trips with Dick Cheney and Rush Limbaugh just aren’t as funny as he had hoped.
